Pseudotype Viruses - Applications and Troubleshooting

Wednesday, 02 October 2013 09:00 - 17:00 London United Kingdom

Pseudotype viruses are rapidly establishing themselves as important research and diagnostic tools of basic and clinical scientists facilitating the detailed study of individual viral genes, host cell receptors and highly pathogenic viruses, circumventing the need for high-level biosafety containment. The switching of surface envelope proteins expressed on the surface of these pseudotypes enables them to be used as surrogate viruses in neutralization/antiviral screening assays and for the study of cell–virus receptor interactions. This meeting encompasses the many diverse applications of pseudotype technologies from a practical, translational and public health perspective.

Who Should Attend

• Public and animal health scientists.

• Individuals establishing diagnostic assays for viruses.

• Epidemiologists, virologists, immunologists, R&D, pre-clinical vaccinologists.

Chikungunya 2013

28-30 October, 2013 Langkawi Island, Malaysia

The recent re-emergence of Chikungunya virus led to millions of affected people worldwide. For the first time, local transmission from mosquitoes were reported outside the tropics, in Italy and France. As the global distribution of Aedes mosquito vectors continues to expand, Chikungunya is now a global threat, and no longer a relatively neglected infection confined to the tropics.

We are therefore pleased to invite all those interested in Chikungunya to this major conference focusing on Chikungunya and related alphaviruses. A broad range of topics will be addressed by leading experts, and the conference will appeal to virologists, clinicians, epidemiologists and entomologists. There will also be opportunities for selected participants to present papers at oral and poster sessions, including a number of Young Investigator Awards.

The conference will be organised jointly by the Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre, of University Malaya in Malaysia, and the Integrated Chikungunya Research (ICRES) consortium, funded by the European Union Seventh Framework Programme.

Advances in Plasmodium vivax Malaria Research

Advances in Plasmodium vivax Malaria Research

May 28 - 29, 2013 Barcelona, Spain

Presented by The New York Academy of Sciences, the "la Caixa" Foundation, B-DEBATE, Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), and the Barcelona Centre for International Health Research (CRESIB)

Malaria accounts for approximately 250 million clinical cases and nearly 1 million deaths annually, mostly in children, in 109 countries. There has been growing evidence that Plasmodium vivax is the most widely distributed malaria parasite, responsible for a significant burden of global disease and accounting for the majority of malaria cases in Latin America and Asia. Despite the increasing awareness that the overall burden, economic impact, and severity of P. vivax disease have been underestimated, this species remains underrepresented in the scientific literature and professional fora.

This 2-day conference will convene a global community of researchers to discuss P. vivax molecular biology and genomics, host–parasite interactions, novel research techniques (e.g., 'omics) to overcome barriers to in vitro, in vivo, and clinical study of P. vivax; drug resistance and drug discovery; and recent clinical trial and in-field efforts in P. vivax prevention, treatment, control, and elimination.

Nanotechnologies in Cancer Diagnosis, Therapy, and Prevention

June 11 - 13, 2013 Moscow, Russia

World Trade Center Moscow Congress Center

Presented by The New York Academy of Sciences, the Mushett Family Foundation, and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology

Harnessing principles from chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering, nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field still in its infancy. Throughout the past decade, nanoparticles and specifically nanoparticle drug delivery systems, have emerged at the forefront of cancer therapies.

Nanotechnology has helped to design and fabricate micro-scale devices, including nanoparticle drug delivery systems able to target tumors and other cancerous tissue. Nanotechnology is also being explored to generate other novel techniques to design biomarkers, immunotherapy, and vaccine development for cancer.

Featuring keynote address by Nobel Laureate Robert Y. Tsien, PhD, this 2.5-day conference will discuss: nanodiagnostics for cancer biomarkers and imaging, nanoparticle toxicity and safety; nanovaccines and nanoimmunotherapeutics; the challenges of targeted delivery in tumors; and nanoparticle-based gene therapy. A discussion of these topics will serve to enhance the translation of research discoveries into improved cancer diagnostic and treatment strategies.

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy

June 19 - 20, 2013 The New York Academy of Sciences

Presented by the Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy Consortium and The New York Academy of Sciences

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML) is, in the general population, a rare but serious demyelinating disease of the brain, often resulting in severe disability or death and is caused by infection of oligodendrocytes by the JC polyomavirus (JCV). It is believed that fifty to sixty percent of the population is sero-positive for JCV, indicating exposure to the virus. Despite the high prevalence of JCV infection in the human population, which typically leads to a chronic, asymptomatic infection, incidence of PML in the general population is very low. The pathogenesis of PML is not well understood. It is believed that the development of PML, while dependent on the presence of JCV, is the result of a confluence of viral and host risk factors, which may include an altered or compromised immune system such as in individuals with HIV-1 infection/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), or patients undergoing chronic immunosuppressive therapies after organ transplantation, for treatment of lymphomas, or for autoimmune conditions, such as MS.

This 2-day conference will bring together basic science researchers, clinicians, physicians, epidemiologists, and regulatory experts from academia, industry, and government to address novel issues, current challenges, and future directions of basic and clinical research relevant to the mitigation, potential future cure, and risk stratification of PML. Topics of discussion will include JCV virology, PML pathogenesis, risk stratification and disease diagnosis and management. The meeting will feature a series of plenary lectures, short talk presentations selected from submitted abstracts, a poster session, and a closing panel discussion.
