Vaccines and Diagnostics for Transboundary Animal Diseases

September 17-19, 2012 Ames, Iowa

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has provided funds for the organization of a Workshop entitled "Vaccines and Diagnostics for Transboundary Animal Diseases," to be held September 17-19, 2012 in Ames Iowa. The primary objective of the workshop is to discuss state of the art measures to serve U.S. and international needs related to vaccine and diagnostic tool development for significant transboundary diseases.

Industry, government and academic scientists are welcome to participate, present information, and learn of current work in this field. Presentations will be made by representatives of federal agencies, biologics industries, and universities. Diseases to be covered include: highly pathogenic avian influenza; exotic Newcastle disease, foot and mouth disease; Rift Valley fever; Nipah and Hendra virus; African swine fever; classical swine fever; Heartwater; Q fever, and Ebola. A poster session will also be held to allow novel research on these diseases and other diseases important for the U.S. National Veterinary Stockpile to be presented and to feature the roles of the federal agencies.

The workshop has four goals:

Sharing of progress on cutting-edge research and providing updates on the current status on vaccines and diagnostics for high priority transboundary animal diseases to help inform the decision making process;
Presentation of information to academic scientists to help them better understand the regulatory process and how to translate research into licensed novel vaccines and diagnostics for high priority transboundary animal diseases;
Provide the opportunity for government officials from each agency working in this area to convey their roles and responsibilities to a broad audience;
To bring together scientists from academia, industry and government in order to stimulate cross-talk.

The Workshop is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate (www.dhs.gov/files/scitech.shtm), the Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases (CEEZAD) at Kansas State University (www.ceezad.org) – a Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Center of Excellence, the Center for Food Security and Public Health/Institute for International Cooperation in Animal Biologics at Iowa State University, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) www.oie.int and the International Association for Biologicals (IABs), www.iabs.org.

The organization of this meeting is possible because of the support of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under Grant Award Number 2010-ST-061-AG0001.

Registration and lodging information will be available in March 2012. The meeting will be held at the Gateway Hotel in Ames, Iowa www.gatewayames.com. Anaerobe 2012--Anaerobe Society of the Americas 11th Biennial Congress

June 27-July 1, 2012 San Francisco, California

The Anaerobe Society of the Americas (ASA) hosts its 11th biennial Congress--ANAEROBE 2012--June 27-July 1, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Francisco, CA USA.

ANAEROBE 2012 will address both the clinical and microbiological aspects of anaerobes, as related to human diseases, animal disease, and environmental conditions. Mixing theory and practical applications, the Congress will consist of invited speakers, oral presentations, and poster presentations, representing work by researchers from around of the world.

Program
The ANAEROBE 2012 program consists of a Pre-Congress Workshop (see below) and general sessions consisting of invited speakers and oral presentations from the submitted abstracts. Further research will be presented as posters, during four Poster Sessions

Target Audience
Researchers, clinicians, and technicians from around the world are invited to attend and participate in this Congress to engage in presentations, exchanges, and dialogue on issues related to the study of anaerobes. We particularly hope to attract bench hospital microbiologists, by offering a Pre-Congress Workshop on Anaerobic Identification Using Conventional Techniques and Sequencing of 16S rDNA and Susceptibility Testing Methods.

Congress Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the latest developments in the field of anaerobe research.
2. Apply new recommendations in the diagnosis, screening, and treatment of clostridial, obstetric and gynecological, periodontal, intestinal, and other anaerobic infections.
3. Understand the role of anaerobic infections in veterinary medicine.
4. Incorporate better utilization of the microbiology laboratory into the delivery of patient care.

Pre-Congress Hands-On Workshop - July 27-28, 2012
A hands-on workshop in a laboratory setting is being planned to explore techniques for identifying anaerobes based on phenotypic characteristics. These methods will include appearance on gram-stain, growth on selective media, susceptibility to special potency antibiotic disks, preformed enzyme reactions, and classical biochemical reactions. A discussion on sequencing 16s rDNA for difficult strains will be included. The Anaerobe Educator software program will be used to present test reactions and to allow for active audience participation in the identification of organisms. Susceptibility testing methods, including agar dilution, broth microdilution, and Etest will be discussed. Each student will receive a copy of the Anaerobe Educator. This workshop is accredited for continuing education contact hours for clinical laboratory scientists.
