Key Advances in Stroke Rehabilitation

12th June 2013 London, United Kingdom

Stroke is the single greatest cause of disability in most Western countries. It is a complex condition and there is a continuing need for further education on evidence-based rehabilitation practice and research developments. Professionals need to be up-to-date with the constant advances in the understanding of the condition, assessment and intervention techniques. There is also a need to look at interventions beyond the acute stages and how to support active participation in the longer term post stroke.

This one-day exciting and accredited conference is aiming to provide the latest key advances in stroke rehabilitation incorporating state of the programmes and techniques that may be used by professionals who are involved in the management and rehabilitation of patients at different stages after stroke.

This conference focuses on providing participants with information on the current understanding of modern rehabilitation therapies in stroke and their effects on activity and participation. Special emphasis will be given to therapies which are person centered and can be used by an interdisciplinary team to deliver effective rehabilitation for the person and their families.

It will be demonstrated how evidence-based interventions can improve stroke functionality, reduce re-admission, and optimize healthcare utilization. Furthermore it will provide insights into the psychological management of stroke.

The expert panel includes clinicians, researchers and scientists in the field of neurology, occupational therapy, nursing, physiotherapy, psychology; and speech and language.

This conference will provide delegates across the world with the unique opportunity to update their knowledge and challenge their thinking on a wide range of topics in stroke rehabilitation.

Atypical Interaction: Conversation Analysis and Communication Impairments

University of Sheffield, United Kingdom- Thursday 27th and Friday 28th June 2013

This conference aims to advance research which uses Conversation Analysis to investigate naturally-occurring social interactions involving one or more participants with a communication impairment.

Conversation Analysis (CA), which examines the moment-by-moment organization of social interaction, and which developed in the context of researching everyday talk, has proven to be a fruitful methodology for the analysis of interactions involving participants with communication impairments.  It has provided new perspectives on the nature of these impairments and how they impact on everyday talk and social identity, and has also been used as the basis for implementing and evaluating intervention programmes which have been used by clinical practitioners such as speech and language therapists.

A particular strength of CA is its capacity to examine what actually takes place in interaction and to focus on the part played by all participants.  Moreover, in examining the full range of interaction resources that participants utilize, such as gesture (including eye gaze and body movement) and the use of objects, as well as spoken language, CA has the potential to examine the diverse ways in which communication can be accomplished despite the communication impairments.  In addition, the analysis of interactions involving persons with a challenged capacity to communicate raises fundamental questions that are relevant for our understanding of human interaction and intersubjectivity.

This conference will bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss new findings, methodological innovations and practical applications in this growing area of applied CA work.

The conference will include empirical papers, data sessions where conference participants can analyze recordings of communication impairment interactions, and a round table discussion.  We hope the conference will be of interest to people from a wide range of academic backgrounds (including speech and language pathology/therapy, audiology, linguistics, psychology, and sociology) and practitioners (including those from speech and language pathology/therapy, audiology, education and clinical rehabilitation).

2nd International Workshop on Speech and Multimodal Interaction in Assistive Environments (SMIAE 2013)

The 2nd International Workshop on Speech and Multimodal Interaction in Assistive Environments (SMIAE 2013) will be held on June, 13th/14th at the 2013 Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics: Human Language Technologies (NAACL HLT 2013), on June 9th - 14th, 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

SMIAE is sponsored by the ACL Special Interest Group on Speech and Language Processing for Assistive Technologies (SIG-SLPAT)

In recent years considerable progress has been made in speech processing and interaction as well as in multimodality. However, the application field of Assistive Environments has only recently become a focus for the speech and multimodality research community.

The SMIAE 2013 workshop will focus on all issues, applications, and development of various tools in the field of Speech and Multimodal Interaction in Assistive Environments. It will be concerned with all topics which fit within the purview of speech and multimodal communication in environments suitable for the elderly and people with physical or cognitive disabilities. Assistive environments are an application area of the research field of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). This research field promotes intelligent assistant systems for a better, healthier, and safer life in the preferred living environments through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Human-computer and human-robot interaction are key technological tools in the area of Assistive Environments, and as such the workshop will particularly aim to draw together speech and multimodal work in these areas. Moreover, both theoretical and applied computational work regarding multimodal interaction in assistive environments will be welcome at this workshop.
