Imaging Neurodegeneration and Repair in Multiple Sclerosis

June 15 - 16, 2012 The New York Academy of Sciences

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) was once difficult to diagnose, yet breakthroughs in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) now enable physicians to visualize newly forming lesions, give a diagnosis of MS, and start treatments with minimal invasiveness and greater accuracy. While conventional MRI studies have been able to establish white matter lesion formation as the major diagnostic criterion for MS, autopsy, animal models and newer imaging methods have shown that this damage is just the tip of the iceberg. Recent advances in imaging allow for the detailed visualization of grey matter, myelin, regional connectivity, and metabolic changes that provide vital clues to the extent MS can impact the central nervous system, and reveal neurobiological targets for new treatments.

This 1.5-day conference will provide an overview of the currently accepted and newly emerging imaging techniques for diagnosis and monitoring of MS. Participants will examine the benefits and limitations of standard and non-conventional imaging based on evidence from basic science research and clinical findings. Pharmacological treatments will be covered, with an emphasis on how imaging may be used to investigate treatment outcomes, including neuroprotection, remyelination, and neural repair, culminating in an open discussion devoted to integrating new imaging procedures in the clinic.

18th Annual Meeting of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping
China
06/10/2012

18th Annual Meeting of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping

The 18th Annual Meeting of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping will be held June 10-14, 2012 in Beijing, China at the China National Convention Center (CNCC).

OHBM draws attendance between 2500-3000 attendees each year. Membership in the organization is growing and the meeting continues to be one of the most significant neuroimaging conferences for those in the field. The OHBM meeting boasts a combination of exciting scientific programs and social events, all tailored to the city the meeting is being held.

The Annual Meeting will have an extensive program of local and international speakers, covering a wide range of topics and issues, specifically addressing the field of human functional neuroimaging and its movement into the scientific mainstream. The focus will be to gather scientists and medical professionals using modern, functional, brain mapping techniques such as PET, SPECT, fMRI, EEG, MEG, optical imaging and neuroanatomical tools for assessment of the functioning of the human brain. It will include the applications of these techniques to study brain implementation of sensory and motor systems, vision, attention, memory and language in normal and pathological states.

Probing the Interior 1800-2012

Conference to take place:

Friday 25 May 2012

The Courtauld Institute of Art and King's College London

Bodily, psychic and spatial interiors can be mapped, traversed and violated in multiple ways. This one-day conference will interrogate and re-evaluate the contested terrain of the interior in its varied forms. It will examine the interlacing and overlapping of different types of interiors, and seek to re-position the ‘interior’ in critical terms. Moreover, it will attempt to develop new ways of thinking about the relationship between the decorative arts, furniture, bio-technologies, anatomy and space. The conference will take place in The Courtauld Institute of Art Research Forum and conclude with a keynote address in the Anatomy Theatre at King’s College London.

The conference will be built around three themes: Threshold, Incision and Autopsy.

This conference welcomes papers from across a wide range of periods and regions. Issues addressed might include, but are not limited to:

• Modes of mapping space

• Figurative and literal gateways/boundaries

• Temporality and space

• Space and subjectivity

• Domestic interiors

• Decorative arts and the body

• The fabrication of furniture

• Anatomical drawing

• Different types of medical imaging

• Medical portraiture

Organised by Dr Lucetta Johnson (The Courtauld Institute of Art) and Dr Keren Hammerschlag (King’s College London)

This event is supported by The Courtauld Institute of Art Research Forum and the Centre for the Humanities and Health, King’s College London
