6th International Conference: Diagnostic Error in Medicine

September 22–25, 2013 Chicago, Illinois

Patient safety and reduced error in medical diagnosis — these are the goals of the Diagnostic Error in Medicine (DEM) Conference. The sixth meeting of this international event, held in Chicago, welcomes health professionals across all disciplines to engage and collaborate in meaningful dialogue.

Diagnostic errors (missed, delayed, incorrect diagnoses) account for significant harm but are underemphasized and understudied. The DEM Conference is dedicated to Define, Measure and Improve diagnostic errors, with an exciting line-up of speakers and educational programming. The DEM Conference is the only event dedicated solely to the problem of diagnostic error, bringing together stakeholders with a shared goal of improving patient safety.

The goals of the Conference include:

Acknowledging the frequency, impact, and public health significance of medical misdiagnosis

Developing a constituency of advocates from across the healthcare delivery spectrum

Defining the causality of, and exploring strategies to improve, diagnostic error in medicine

Sharing research methods and results relevant to clinical reasoning, diagnostic error, and misdiagnosis-related harm

This program is jointly sponsored by the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine and the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine
