4th Annual Integrative Medicine for Mental Health Conference

September 20-22, 2013 Chicago, Illinois

This three-day international conference will explore the field of Integrative Medicine in the treatment of mental health, autism, and related disorders. The current trial-and-error, poly-pharmacy approach to the treatment of psychiatric disorders may not work for everyone. Research studies have revealed that many disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, and autism spectrum disorders often have dietary and biological causes which contribute to symptoms. Patients have better outcomes when these causes are successfully addressed and treated through a combination of specialized testing and nutritional therapies, even in combination with traditional approaches.

A comprehensive overview of biological testing, designed to detect underlying health issues that contribute to imbalanced brain chemistry and behavioral abnormalities will be presented. Practical clinical applications of nutritional therapies for the treatment of mental illness and autism will be presented in detail during this conference. Pharmacological treatments and interactions will also be addressed. Numerous case studies will be presented to demonstrate how individuals respond to integrative treatments. Overall, the main focus of this conference is to give practitioners a whole body approach to successfully diagnose underlying issues contributing to the manifestations of neurological, social, and behavioral disorders. In addition, the integrative treatments for these disorders will be presented in detail.

We are happy to announce that the 2013 conference will present new topics including the treatments of Psychosis and Schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, hormone and thyroid imbalances, drug and supplement interactions, intestinal biofilms and neurofeedback therapy.

14th Annual National Center for Responsible Gaming Conference on Gambling and Addiction

September 22-24, 2013 Las Vegas, Nevada

For more than a decade, the NCRG Conference on Gambling and Addiction has provided a unique forum where all stakeholders in the field of gambling disorders and responsible gaming come together to discuss the latest research, share best practices and explore real-world applications for new scientific findings.

Changes in health care policies and mental health diagnostic codes are driving a larger conversation of what recovery and prevention should include for those with addictive disorders. From the Affordable Care Act to the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-5, these changes impact how researchers study gambling disorders, how the industry builds responsible gaming programs to educate their patrons and how clinicians relate to their clients.

The 14th annual NCRG Conference on Gambling and Addiction will bridge the gap between these key stakeholders and the public about what these changes in the mental health space mean for communities. National leaders in public health, the gaming industry and academia will examine these issues by discussing the latest and most relevant research and news key topics, including:

■ How the Affordable Care Act and DSM-5 will impact treatment options

■ The effectiveness of evidence-based self-help recovery resources

■ Neurobiology of gambling disorders

■ The efficacy of responsible gaming programs - both in person and online.

This three-day conference is designed to enhance your professional development, whether you’re in the health care sector, the gaming industry, government or academia, by providing the following:

■ The latest information on treatment for gambling disorders

■ Continuing education units for clinicians

■ Ideas for building and enhancing responsible gaming programs

■ Opportunities for researchers to present their work in the annual poster session

■ A critical perspective that will help gaming regulators and public officials develop and evaluate policies that address gambling disorders

■ Interactive pre-conference workshops

Accelerating Translational Neurotechnology: Fourth Annual Aspen Brain Forum

September 18 - 20, 2013 Aspen Meadows Resort

Presented by The Aspen Brain Forum Foundation, Science Translational Medicine, and the New York Academy of Sciences

Neurotechnology encompasses electrical, chemical, and medical devices and products that can interact with or intervene in the activity of the central nervous system. These technologies include neuroprosthetics, neuroengineering, neuroimaging, optogenetics, neuromodulation, and neural stem cell therapies. Translating neurotechnologies from the laboratory into clinical and commercial products has been an arduous process. Yet many of these new tools show great potential to revolutionize the treatment of neurological diseases and disorders including depression, pain, headache, epilepsy, neuromuscular disease, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain injury.

Through a series of plenary sessions, panel discussions, and interactive breakout groups, this 2.5-day international conference shall explore innovative scientific, clinical, and organizational models for advancing the translation of neuroscience research into technology that can dramatically improve diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disease. Participants will also examine the ethical and regulatory challenges in translating neuroscience research, and the potential economic impact of their clinical application.

This conference includes a breakout session. During registration, you will be asked to choose a work group based on your area/disease of interest. Please pick your first and second choices for this session. You may also write in an alternate topic. We will create additional groups if there is sufficient interest. Registrants will receive an email with work group details several weeks prior to the conference.

Choices include: Parkinson's Disease, Major Depression and other Mood Disorders, Chronic Pain, Alzheimer's Disease, or Traumatic Brain Injury.

Meanings of Madness: Critical and Creative Perspectives

Catherine Mcauley School Of Nursing And Midwifery and School Of Applied Social Studies, University College Cork, Ireland in association with Critical Voices Network Ireland

13 And 14 November 2013, University College Cork, Ireland

Madness is a word that continues to invite controversy, with some perceiving it to be a derogatory term, others perceiving it as a celebration of human creativity and diversity, whilst others position themselves somewhere in the middle. This year’s conference, now in its 5th year, aims to explore these various positions by focusing on critical perspectives on the meaning of madness as a human experience and on creative responses to such an experience.

The conference offers opportunities to consider:

• Meanings of madness

• Broadening understandings of expressions of madness

• creative approaches to engaging with and responding to madness

The Conference organisers are Harry Gijbels, Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Lydia Sapouna, School of Applied Social Studies, University College Cork, Ireland.

7th Biennial Congress of the International Society of Affective Disorders

28th – 30th April, 2014 Berlin, Germany

Affective disorders: integrated approaches for the 21st century

Join us at the Intercontinental in Berlin for the 7th Biennial Congress of The International Society of Affective Disorders, 28th – 30th April, 2014.

This major international conference aims to promote networking, exchange of ideas and experiences, and advance awareness of the consequence of mental health to global health and human development.

Although the affective disorders are not a clearly delineated group of illnesses they include unipolar and bipolar depression, generalised anxiety disorder, and more specific anxiety disorders such as agoraphobia, panic disorder and social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There is a high level of similarity and co-morbidity among these illnesses and it is sensible to consider them as a single group.

Join us at ISAD 2014 if you are a clinical practitioner, clinical researcher, industry professional, nurse or other healthcare practitioners interested in affective disorders
