Accelerating Translational Neurotechnology: Fourth Annual Aspen Brain Forum

September 18 - 20, 2013 Aspen Meadows Resort

Presented by The Aspen Brain Forum Foundation, Science Translational Medicine, and the New York Academy of Sciences

Neurotechnology encompasses electrical, chemical, and medical devices and products that can interact with or intervene in the activity of the central nervous system. These technologies include neuroprosthetics, neuroengineering, neuroimaging, optogenetics, neuromodulation, and neural stem cell therapies. Translating neurotechnologies from the laboratory into clinical and commercial products has been an arduous process. Yet many of these new tools show great potential to revolutionize the treatment of neurological diseases and disorders including depression, pain, headache, epilepsy, neuromuscular disease, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain injury.

Through a series of plenary sessions, panel discussions, and interactive breakout groups, this 2.5-day international conference shall explore innovative scientific, clinical, and organizational models for advancing the translation of neuroscience research into technology that can dramatically improve diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disease. Participants will also examine the ethical and regulatory challenges in translating neuroscience research, and the potential economic impact of their clinical application.

This conference includes a breakout session. During registration, you will be asked to choose a work group based on your area/disease of interest. Please pick your first and second choices for this session. You may also write in an alternate topic. We will create additional groups if there is sufficient interest. Registrants will receive an email with work group details several weeks prior to the conference.

Choices include: Parkinson's Disease, Major Depression and other Mood Disorders, Chronic Pain, Alzheimer's Disease, or Traumatic Brain Injury.

This workshop provides training in the use of clinical hypnosis and its applications to children and teens with various conditions in pediatric settings. The workshop is offered at three levels (Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced) depending on the clinician’s previous training in pediatric hypnosis. Strong emphasis is placed on experiential learning, with supervised practice of hypnotic techniques suitable for children/teens and of integrating a developmental perspective.

ELIGIBILITY AND TARGET AUDIENCE

These workshops would be ideal for persons holding a:

• Doctoral Degree in Medicine, Psychology, or Dentistry

• Masters Degree in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical or Counseling Psychology

• Masters Degree in Nursing or a Registered Nurse with subspecialty training and certification

• Other Advanced degree health care providers, e.g. Occupational and Physical Therapists, Speech and Language Pathologists, et. al.

• Child Life Specialists holding a Bachelor’s degree

International Conference on Deep Brain Stimulation - 25 Years

The International Conference on Deep Brain Stimulation - 25 years - will take place in Düsseldorf, Germany, from 30 - 31 May, 2013.

The topics of the scientific program include

1) Basic mechanisms and animal models of DBS

2) Human electrophysiology and imaging

3) Deep Brain Stimulation in

- Movement disorders

- Neuropsychiatric disorders

- Dementia / epilepsy / pain

4) History, visions, ethics

In the past 25 years the development of deep brain stimulation has revolutionized the treatment of Parkinson´s disease and other movement disorders. Although the mechanisms of DBS are still not fully understood the remarkable therapeutic efficacy of DBS in Parkinson´s disease and tremor has prompted clinical and basic research to scrutinize further applications in neurological and psychiatric disorders. At the same time DBS has tremendously fostered research in basal ganglia physiology and pathophysiology.

This conference will provide a unique opportunity to cover and discuss the current state-of-the-art, hot topics, and future directions of DBS in plenary talks, symposia, short oral communications and poster presentations.

8th Interdisciplinary World Congress on Low Back & Pelvic Pain
United Arab Emirates
10/27/2013

8th Interdisciplinary World Congress on Low Back & Pelvic Pain

October 27-31 2013, Dubai

The overall theme for the 2013 Dubai congress will be: Advances in Multidisciplinary Research for Better Spinal/Pelvic CareLumbopelvic Pain is still the second most common cause of sick leave in the industrialized world. It is a problem for patients as they try to seek clear consistent advice. For practitioners it is a complicated multi-factorial issue, especially when psychosomatic factors are involved and the sheer variety of treatments betrays our lack of precise knowledge in predicting outcomes. The great variation in clinical practice without consistent results would suggest sometimes less than ideal care. Too often the choice of treatment reflects the specific skills of the practitioner rather than the needs of the patient.

The congress promotes empowerment of the patients to participate in their own care and promotes cost effective prevention of treatment. The program will be developed in partnership with appropriate patient, professional and scientific organisations, companies, health care providers, governments and non-governmental organisations in consultation with global and regional stakeholders.

Melancholy Minds and Painful Bodies: Genealogy, Geography, Pathogeny
United Kingdom

Melancholy Minds and Painful Bodies: Genealogy, Geography, Pathogeny

University of Liverpool, United Kingdom 9-11 July 2013

One of the major developments in the study of melancholia over the last thirty years has been the rise to aesthetic and cultural prominence of varieties of negative emotions proposed and discussed as melancholy, including different conceptions, analyses, and portrayals from grief to insanity. Most recently, Lars von Trier’s film Melancholia(2011) happens to be the melodramatic adaptation of the concept fuelled by cinematic symbols. Correspondingly, often observed as ‘a central European discourse’, melancholia has resurfaced to embody complementary or paradoxical notions not merely in the literary analysis of texts and contexts, but it has also emerged to retrieve its historical categorization. The cultural and social history of emotions entwined with modern medical and psychiatric lexicalization has opened new pathways to provide relative definitions of melancholia. However, theories about the choice of analogies for melancholy, whether aesthetic, cinematic, religious, or medical, somehow fail to distinguish the connections between contrary factors involved in melancholia.

It is also noteworthy that theories of characterization, no matter of what kind, tend to reformulate and evaluate contrary factors for the sake of preserving ‘superiority’ according to prevalent taste at each moment in time. In Britain, for example, individual and collective melancholia has been appreciated as a sign of genius and national pride at one time and announced as a national malady at another. Analogous is the contemporary history of behavioural rather than cognitive attributes to grief, e.g. tearfulness. Pain, in comparison, is bodily and often mental distress which in the past was closely perceived in relation to melancholia, but today research on pain is divorced from depression let alone melancholy. Thus, we miss the ‘melancholy-pain bridge’ in contemporary scholarship of mental and physical suffering. On the other hand, while pain is seen through the lens of universality, with management models stretching from Chinese medicine to Latin America, melancholia has rarely been investigated beyond the Western borders with regard to its genealogy, pathology, pathogeny, and management. Whether this geographical focus is a matter of re-establishing pre-eminence or in want of psycholinguistic reference, thereby centred on a gap in universal scientific communication, it invites intriguing and challenging enquiries.
