Obesity Week 2013

November 11-16, 2013 Atlanta, Georgia

In our first year, we have brought together the resources of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and The Obesity Society (TOS) to co-locate our respective annual meetings under one roof. We have developed the preeminent annual scientific and educational conference covering the full scope of the obesity issue, from cutting edge basic science and clinical research to intervention and public policy discussions that can impact the quality of life for millions who suffer from obesity.

Obesity Week participants will benefit from the educational, networking and scientific synergies created through the collaboration of these international obesity organizations. Programming will cover the full interdisciplinary spectrum and feature the world's leading experts in their respective fields. A comprehensive agenda will include:

•Scientific sessions of both TOS and ASMBS

•Pre-conference Continuing Education

•Policy and public health discussions

•Co-sponsored programming and networking events

•Industry-sponsored symposia

In addition, Obesity Week will feature an exposition hall that is the largest of its kind, showcasing the newest, most innovative products, services and technologies from leading global companies and organizations.

Up Close and Personalized, International Congress on Personalized Medicine

July 25-28, 2013 Paris, France

Personalized Medicine is revolutionizing the medical world. Understanding and integrating genetic and molecular information with traditional clinical knowledge is the hallmark of this transformation. At present much of the medical practice is based on standards of care derived from the epidemiologic studies of large cohorts that do not take into account the individual’s genetic, proteomic, and metabolic characteristics. Furthermore, in spite of efforts to develop data-driven, expert–based, clinical decision support systems, there are no clear and simple means to disseminate new findings into clinical practice.

Following the great success of the meeting in Florence Italy last year, the main focus of the second Up Close and Personalized Congress is to examine the essential clinical, imaging, genomic, proteomic, metabolomic, pharmacogenomic and biomarker data necessary to predict, prevent and treat major medical conditions concerning metabolism (diabetes and obesity) and cancer. As in the first meeting one of the key themes will be to explore bio-informatic tools, algorithms, decision support systems and other new platforms for disease prediction and better tailoring treatment modeling to the individual patient. Furthermore, we will discuss health policy issues such as barriers for implementing Personalized Medicine, and quality assurance.

Probiotics, Prebiotics, and the Host Microbiome: The Science of Translation

Wednesday, June 12, 2013 | 7:45 AM - 6:00 PM The New York Academy of Sciences

Presented by The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences and The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics

In the past decade, researchers have observed a strong convergence of prebiotics, probiotics, and the microbiome in areas of host physiology such as the immune system, metabolism, and neurological function. This 1-day conference will serve as a neutral forum to critically examine the potential population-wide economic and public health benefits of translating this research into innovative functional foods and biotherapeutics for a broad spectrum of conditions including obesity, diabetes, inflammatory and gastrointestinal disease, and malnutrition. Participants will apply the rigorous standards of evidence-based medicine and evidence-based nutrition to evaluate and outline novel research and policy strategies to advance the incorporation of prebiotics- and probiotics-based applications to improve public health.
