15th EMBL PhD Symposium: Competition in Biology - The Race for Survival From Molecules to Systems

15th EMBL PhD Symposium: Competition in Biology - The Race for Survival From Molecules to Systems

21-23 November 2013 Heidelberg, Germany

From enzyme catalysis to ecosystems dynamics, biology is riddled with competition. DNA sequences compete for transcription factor binding to be expressed, cells in communities often compete for resources, pathogens compete against host immune systems, and on a larger scale, organisms compete against each other for limited resources in their environment.

The 15th EMBL PhD Symposium (21-23 November 2013), entitled 'Competition in Biology - The Race for Survival from Molecules to Systems', addresses this.

The Symposium is an annual event, organised by first-year PhD students at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany. It brings together fellow students from around the world, for a 3-day series of talks by leading experts but also by students themselves. Networking opportunities, poster sessions and workshops are also included in the programme.

Biological competition offers an exciting and fresh perspective on the life sciences. The 2013 Symposium is timely in contextualising biological competition as a fundamental concept from the biomolecular to the systems level.

Watermicro 2013--17th International Symposium on Health-Related Water Microbiology

15-20th September, 2013 Florianopolis Island, Santa Catarina, Brazil

The Organizing Committee of the 17th International Symposium on Health-Related Water Microbiology invites you to the WaterMicro2013 Symposium, which will be held in Florianopolis Island, Santa Catarina, Brazil, from 15-20th September, 2013. This is a biennial event organized by the International Water Association (IWA) Specialist Group on Health-Related Water Microbiology (HRWM) established in 1977, that covers all aspects of infectious diseases transmitted by water. The event congregates experts working in many fields: environmental and clinical virology, bacteriology and parasitology; infectious diseases epidemiology, microbial risk assessment; water treatment engineering and environmental health practices, amongst others. This is a valuable and unique opportunity for the scientific community, students and professionals to meet and exchange ideas, to explore the state of the art and to debate the key issues related to the importance of the microorganisms in water quality and their impact on human health. This is also a great opportunity to meet environmental microbiologists studying health-related water microbiology in the Latin America and the Caribbean.

Topics to be covered at WaterMicro 2013 include water pollution and diseases;  microbial source tracking; catchment protection; water reuse and health, microbial biofilms; water and sanitation in developing countries; global change and water quality; recreational water and health; epidemiology of waterborne diseases; microbial risk assessment as well as factors relevant to the microbial quality of shellfish growing areas.

New Approaches & Concepts in Microbiology
Germany

New Approaches & Concepts in Microbiology

European Molecular Biology Laboratory Heidelberg, Germany Monday 14 October - Wednesday 16 October 2013

Why you should attend

The meeting will cover a broad range of topics in prokaryotic biology -antibiotic resistance, transcriptional & genetic networks, bacterial communities, regulation, signaling, cell biology, pathogenesis-, with an emphasis on novel approaches that drive each field or have the potential to revolutionize future research in microbiology. This meeting aims to bridge the gap between traditional microbiology and systems approaches-novel technologies, by exposing microbiologists to new ways of addressing their hypotheses, and allowing systems or technology experts to get a feeling of the burning questions in the field and/or find collaborators for follow-up work or for applying their technology.

We envision that this conference will become a must-attend conference for scientists working with bacteria and new technologies, and will turn into a series. The conference series will remain in the interface of new technologies and new biology in prokaryotic organisms, but the biological focuses and organizers will regularly change.
