Microscopy & Microanalysis 2012

July 29 – August 2, 2012 Phoenix, Arizona

The annual M&M meeting continues to be the premier meeting for scientists, technologists, and students who use microscopy or microanalysis in their research. The Program
Committee has put together an outstanding scientific program that brings the latest advances in the biological and physical sciences, techniques and instrumentation. Complementing the program is one of the largest exhibitions of microscopy and microanalysis instrumentation and resources in the world.

Educational opportunities include a variety of Sunday short courses, tutorials, evening vendor tutorials, and in-week intensive workshops. After a successful inauguration at M&M 2011, the daily poster awards will continue to highlight the best student posters in instrumentation & techniques, biological applications of microscopy & microanalysis, and physical applications of microscopy & microanalysis.

Anaerobe 2012--Anaerobe Society of the Americas 11th Biennial Congress

June 27-July 1, 2012 San Francisco, California

The Anaerobe Society of the Americas (ASA) hosts its 11th biennial Congress--ANAEROBE 2012--June 27-July 1, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Francisco, CA USA.

ANAEROBE 2012 will address both the clinical and microbiological aspects of anaerobes, as related to human diseases, animal disease, and environmental conditions. Mixing theory and practical applications, the Congress will consist of invited speakers, oral presentations, and poster presentations, representing work by researchers from around of the world.

Program
The ANAEROBE 2012 program consists of a Pre-Congress Workshop (see below) and general sessions consisting of invited speakers and oral presentations from the submitted abstracts. Further research will be presented as posters, during four Poster Sessions

Target Audience
Researchers, clinicians, and technicians from around the world are invited to attend and participate in this Congress to engage in presentations, exchanges, and dialogue on issues related to the study of anaerobes. We particularly hope to attract bench hospital microbiologists, by offering a Pre-Congress Workshop on Anaerobic Identification Using Conventional Techniques and Sequencing of 16S rDNA and Susceptibility Testing Methods.

Congress Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the latest developments in the field of anaerobe research.
2. Apply new recommendations in the diagnosis, screening, and treatment of clostridial, obstetric and gynecological, periodontal, intestinal, and other anaerobic infections.
3. Understand the role of anaerobic infections in veterinary medicine.
4. Incorporate better utilization of the microbiology laboratory into the delivery of patient care.

Pre-Congress Hands-On Workshop - July 27-28, 2012
A hands-on workshop in a laboratory setting is being planned to explore techniques for identifying anaerobes based on phenotypic characteristics. These methods will include appearance on gram-stain, growth on selective media, susceptibility to special potency antibiotic disks, preformed enzyme reactions, and classical biochemical reactions. A discussion on sequencing 16s rDNA for difficult strains will be included. The Anaerobe Educator software program will be used to present test reactions and to allow for active audience participation in the identification of organisms. Susceptibility testing methods, including agar dilution, broth microdilution, and Etest will be discussed. Each student will receive a copy of the Anaerobe Educator. This workshop is accredited for continuing education contact hours for clinical laboratory scientists.
