NGS 2013 Manchester: Applications & Bottlenecks

5th – 6th November 2013 Manchester, United Kingdom

The aim of our NGS conferences is to address key issues being faced by laboratories that are implementing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) into their workflows. Whilst NGS is a very powerful technology that holds the promise of unlocking the secrets of DNA sequences on a large scale, its implementation has not been as smooth as anticipated.

Our previous co-organized event in this area – NGS2013 Oxford Workshop & Symposium – focussed on bioinformatics, but with the current NGS conference in Manchester we want to take the theme a step further by broadening the discussion areas

Whether your laboratory is working in the area of clinical genetics, animal, plant or microbial genetics you will be aware that there are common issues that unite researchers in all of these fields when it comes to establishing workflows for NGS. These issues which have become recognized bottlenecks across all areas of NGS based research include but are not limited to Library generation, Data analysis and Data storage. Whilst these issues are now being addressed by start-up as well as established biotech companies, they are being tackled in isolation of the entire NGS workflow.

The NGS 2013 Manchester conference will bring together leading experts from widely diverse backgrounds to tackle these issues by networking, discussing the common bottlenecks and working with biotech companies to try and mitigate these issues. We strive to keep our conferences informal and create a good personal atmosphere so as to facilitate dialogue and networking amongst all participants.

The result is an NGS conference that gather researchers from Pharma, Biotech, Hospitals and Universities who are working in areas and applications that benefit each other when discussed in the context of common NGS bottlenecks. Researchers working in the areas of micro RNA’s, Exome & Genomic sequencing, NGS panels, inherited diseases, expression analysis, viral genomics to name but a few areas can now listen to each other and find effective strategies and partners that will help in ironing out the bottlenecks.

Drug Discovery Re-Invented

The Conference will take place at the Hilton Scottsdale Resort & Villas Scottsdale, Arizona, USA , from October 16-19 2013.

The conference will center on new approaches to drug discovery in an industry where the landscape is changing rapidly. With large pharma reducing investment in internal early stage research, drug pipelines will increasingly be filled by alternative sources. These players include: government, academic labs, non-profits, biotech companies, and pharmaceutical “open innovation” models. Speakers will cover new developments in medicinal chemistry, natural products, structure-based design, and screening technologies. They will also provide examples of successful strategies for advancing new drug candidates in this era of distributed discovery.

This conference is designed to attract the following attendees: medicinal, computational, and synthetic organic chemists; structural and screening biologists; research management and entrepreneurs; industrial and academic scientists.

Symposium on Disability, Technology and Rehabilitation in Low and Middle Income Countries

June 27th & 28th, 2013 Seattle, Washington, USA

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington will host the symposium, Disability, Technology and Rehabilitation in Low and Middle Income Countries, on June 27 & 28th, 2013 at the University of Washington. Building off of the 2009 and 2010 workshops on Technology & Disability in the Developing World, the 2013 symposium will expand topic areas to include rehabilitation services.

Symposium objective

To bring together researchers, clinicians, consumers, consumer led organizations, policy makers, technology developers and providers, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders who focus on improving and increasing access to technology and rehabilitation products and services with the goal of ensuring full inclusion and participation for people with disabilities in low-resourced communities in low and middle income countries.

Across the broad areas of technology and rehabilitation in limited resourced environments, we are particularly interested in the following specific topics:

■Assistive technology and accessible information and communication technology
■Service delivery models
■Human resource development
■Policy, regulatory and funding mechanisms for supporting provision of technology and rehabilitation services
■Research and evidence-based practice

12th European AAATE Conference (Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe)

12th European AAATE Conference (Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe)

19-22 September, 2013 Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal

AAATE 2013 is sponsored by INSTICC – Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the "12th European AAATE Conference" that will take place September 19 to 22 in Vilamoura, Portugal, in the Algarve region, one of the most beautiful areas of our country. Those that have been associated to the area of “Assistive Technology” in Europe for the last two decades might remember that the last of the ECART Conferences – the precursor of the AAATE Conferences - took place in Lisbon, Portugal in 1995. And it was during this ECART Conference in 1995 that AAATE was officially created. Thus, in 2013 AAATE will commemorate its 18th anniversary, reaching the adult age. As so, we hope to be able to meet the expectations of all of those in Europe and abroad that know the importance of a solid scientific basis in the area of "Assistive Technology" as a crucial support to improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities and older persons in Europe.

One of the main objectives of the AAATE2013 Conference is to bring together researchers, professionals, manufacturers, end users and their families, and combine their knowledge, expertise, needs and expectations, contributing in a multidisciplinary way to the success of this meeting. This will be achieved not only by the presentation of papers during the two and a half days of the conference, but also through the participation in Instructional Courses and in a "Research Symposium" held immediately after the main Conference, a novel approach to contribute to the advancement of the field in Europe. We are looking forward to meet you all in Vilamoura, Portugal, for the 2013 AAATE Conference!

New Approaches & Concepts in Microbiology

New Approaches & Concepts in Microbiology

European Molecular Biology Laboratory Heidelberg, Germany Monday 14 October - Wednesday 16 October 2013

Why you should attend

The meeting will cover a broad range of topics in prokaryotic biology -antibiotic resistance, transcriptional & genetic networks, bacterial communities, regulation, signaling, cell biology, pathogenesis-, with an emphasis on novel approaches that drive each field or have the potential to revolutionize future research in microbiology. This meeting aims to bridge the gap between traditional microbiology and systems approaches-novel technologies, by exposing microbiologists to new ways of addressing their hypotheses, and allowing systems or technology experts to get a feeling of the burning questions in the field and/or find collaborators for follow-up work or for applying their technology.

We envision that this conference will become a must-attend conference for scientists working with bacteria and new technologies, and will turn into a series. The conference series will remain in the interface of new technologies and new biology in prokaryotic organisms, but the biological focuses and organizers will regularly change.
