ITBAM '12 3rd International Conference on Information Technology in Bio- and Medical Informatics

Vienna (Austria) September 3 - 7, 2012

Data intensive disciplines, such as life sciences and medicine, are promoting vivid research activities in the area of databases. Modern technologies, such as high-throughput mass-spectrometry and sequencing, micro-arrays, high-resolution imaging, etc. produce enormous and continuously increasing amounts of data. Huge public databases provide access to aggregated and consolidated information on genome and protein sequences, biological pathways, diseases, anatomy atlases, and scientific literature. There has never been more potentially available information to study biomedical systems, ranging from single cells to complete organisms. However, it is a non-trivial task to transform the vast amount of biomedical data into actionable information triggering scientific progress and supporting patient management. Major biomedical application scenarios for research in the database community include but are not limited to:

Systems biology
Genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics
Genome-wide association studies
Drug target discovery and personalized medicine
Neuroscience and neuroinformatics
Electronic patient records
Patient monitoring
Surgery planning and support
etc.

Various emerging database technologies for coping with the challenges of these application scenarios have been developed and are an active area of research in information technology:
Administration of vast amounts of data
Integration of heterogeneous data sources
Federated and distributed databases
Data warehouses
Data mining techniques such as classification, clustering, association rule mining, etc.
Decision support systems
Information and image retrieval
Signal processing and streaming databases
Privacy protection and data security
Data quality assurance
Process management and collaborative work
User interfaces and visualization
Interoperability and standardization
etc.

Designing database technology to support applications in life sciences and medicine is an inspiring field of interdisciplinary research. The path from an idea to a practical application is often long and laborious, involving intensive interactions between experts in information technology, life sciences and the medical field. ITBAM accompanies and supports this path by providing an excellent venue for the exchange of ideas, fruitful discussion, and effective interaction among interdisciplinary researchers.

Workshop I: Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an important part of medical science in the world. Chinese Medicine is good at prevention and prediction of diseases. But the typical methods of TCM mostly rely on doctors’ empirical experience, and a sophisticated collection of theories in a seemingly different paradigm from today’s mainstream western medicine. This might greatly restrict its applications and promotions. The development of information technologies has promoted the development and applications of TCM. It is becoming a revolutionary research method and technology development for data collection and management, data mining and analysis. This workshop will bring together researchers all of world who are interested in TCM to share research results, advances and practical experience, with the focus on using information technologies to solve issues on TCM. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to

Modeling and Information standardization in TCM
Information management and sharing in TCM hospitals
Informationalization of health management and services in TCM
Architecture of healthcare information system for TCM
Development and applications of digital TCM techniques and equipments
Methods of diagnosis and treatment evaluation system in TCM
Prediction and monitoring modeling in TCM
Data gathering techniques in TCM
Analysis techniques for the clinical TCM data
Information techniques for the evaluation of personalized TCM treatment

Workshop II: Industrial Applications and Services on eHealth

Information technologies are becoming an ever-increasingly important part in the healthcare industry. Many companies around the world have successfully developed proprietary systems, tools and devices for their targeted applications in eHealth. But from an industry point of view, technologies alone are not enough for a significant advancement in an emerging market. How to combine government, medical institutions、insurance and other healthcare service providers together is a challenging issue. In particular, how to provide eHealth services with new service models to special demographic people, such as aging, maternal and children, disabled and rural people, are especially challenging. The goal of this workshop is to bring industrial partners together to share their experiences and exchange ideas in their practice of providing eHealth services. Topics include, but not limited to

eHealth service models for aging, maternal and children, disabled, and rural people
eHealth service deployment case study
eHealth and the Internet-of-Things
Person Health Records (PHRs) management and its applications
Chronic disease management through eHealth
Information sharing and interaction between different institutions, such as insurance, bank, government, hospitals for eHealth

17th Annual CyberPsychology & CyberTherapy Conference (CYBER17)
Belgium
09/25/2012

17th Annual CyberPsychology & CyberTherapy Conference (CYBER17)

This year the Interactive Media Institute, in collaboration with the Virtual Reality Medical Institute, is organizing the International Association of CyberPsychology, Training, & Rehabilitation’s (iACToR) 17th Annual CyberPsychology & CyberTherapy Conference (CYBER17), scheduled for September 25-28, 2012 in Brussels, Belgium. We would like to invite you to join us!

The Annual CyberPsychology & CyberTherapy Conference began as a symposium that featured presentations dealing mostly with conceptual matters and future possibilities at the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality Conference. CYBER17 has now grown to a full-scale conference with presentations that demonstrate controlled clinical trials with unique applications of cutting edge technologies that improve the access and increase the quality of healthcare.

CYBER17 will continue to build upon this 17-year legacy, which includes the 2011 conference just completed in Gatineau, Canada, which attracted 200+ participants from 25 countries. Locating this year’s conference in Europe’s capital, Brussels, provides a unique opportunity to raise the conference’s visibility and highlight the importance of technology and healthcare research. Prominent academic representatives from Europe, North America, and Asia will serve as Scientific Chairs and on its Scientific Committee. iACToR’s Secretary General, Professor Brenda K. Wiederhold, who divides her time between the U.S. and Europe (http://iactor.ning.com), will serve as the conference’s chief organizer and host.

CYBER17’s focus is three-fold:

1. The Impact of Technologies as Tools
CYBER17 will continue its examination of the exciting applications of advanced technologies being used in training, therapy, rehabilitation, and education for the improvement of the quality and availability of healthcare for people around the globe.

2. The Influence of New Technologies
CYBER17 will further its investigation into how new technologies are influencing behavior and society through the use of positive technology, healthy ageing, well?being, cyberadvertising, cyberfashion, and cyberstalking to name a few.

3. The Imprint of Social Networking
CYBER17 will embrace, as it did in 2011, the exploration of social networking tools on individual behavior and societal relations.

Encouraged topics include but are not limited to:
• Virtual Environments
• Advanced Interaction Training
• Video-conferencing
• Robotics
• Brain Computer Interfaces
• Cognitive Rehabilitation & Therapy
• Wearable computing
