International Street Medicine Symposium IX

October 24-26, 2013 Boston, Massachusetts

The Street Medicine Institute is excited to announce the 9th annual International Street Medicine Symposium, to be held in historic Boston, Massachusetts on October 24-26, 2013, with a special pre-symposium “Street Medicine 101” workshop on October 23rd for interested participants. The Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, widely regarded as one of the world’s largest and most effective homeless health care programs, has generously agreed to serve as a local sponsoring organization.

Learning Activities

The International Street Medicine Symposium is the world’s premiere educational event dedicated to the health care of unsheltered or “rough-sleeping” homeless populations. As always, the Symposium will offer a slate of homeless health care experts from around the globe presenting clinical topics, innovations, research outcomes, and best practices relevant to Street Medicine. The popular format mix of large-group lectures, small-group workshops, and poster presentations will be back again after positive reviews from last year’s Symposium. Additionally, there will be ample exposure to the talented clinicians and administrative staff of the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program with scheduled site visits to the program’s renowned clinical facilities, including the Barbara McInnis House medical respite program. We hope to offer CME credits for eligible clinicians again this year.

Street Medicine clinicians and administrators from around the world have long regarded the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program as a leader of the Street Medicine movement; many of the field’s most important research outcomes and clinical innovations have come from the talented clinicians and staff at BHCHP. The program’s extensive network of clinical services across the spectrum of homelessness and seamless integration into Boston’s world-class academic mental centers and health sciences educational institutions stands as an international model for comprehensive, continuous, and high-quality health care programming for persons experiencing homelessness.

In addition to its status as a homeless health care hub, Boston was chosen to host this year’s Symposium for its unrivaled combination of metropolitan beauty, history, international accessibility, and diversity. And there is no better time to visit Boston than late October, when the New England fall foliage season is at its spectacular peak!

Reconnect and Re-energize

As consistently reported by past participants, one of the most valuable experiences of the Symposium is the opportunity to interact with Street Medicine colleagues from across the country and around the world. Again this year, program activities will incorporate time to reconnect with old friends, make new contacts, and share stories of the triumphs and challenges of this important work. Implications of the Affordable Care Act for Low Income Individuals and Families

The full implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) over the coming years will bring many changes in the level of and process for access to health care among poor and working class Americans.  In November 2013, the Center for Poverty Research at the University of California, Davis will host an interdisciplinary conference focusing on research that provides insight and background into likely effects of the ACA on low income individuals and their families.

Global Mental Health Forum--Sustainable Development Through Global Action: The Case for Investing in Mental Health

Following on from previous successful events on global mental health and the 2007 Lancet Series on Global Mental Health conference, we would like to invite you to attend our inaugural Global Mental Health Forum to be held on 27-28 September 2013 at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London.

This year’s forum, hosted by the Centre for Global Mental Health (a joint initiative of King’s Health Partners and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), aims to encourage the sharing of evidence and experience to strengthen the case for greater investment in mental health research and services around the world– especially in low and middle income countries. 43rd Annual Association of Black Sociologists Conference Social (In)Justice and Health Disparities: A Continuing Saga

Chronic illness and disease constitute major societal problems in the United States. These problems include, but are not limited to, obesity, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and cancer.  Marginalized populations, and people of color in particular, are disproportionately affected by chronic illness. These populations are also less likely to have access to or receive appropriate and timely care and treatment. These health disparities are socially and economically detrimental to the health of society at large. Given the gravity of growing health disparities it is without question that serious investigation by sociologists, economists, psychologists, health care workers, and scholars and practitioners from other disciplines is needed.

International Homelessness Research Conference: Advancing the Policy and Practice of Crisis Response

Monday, June 3 - Tuesday, June 4, 2013 University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania and the National Center on Homelessness Among Veterans in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs are organizing an international research conference on homelessness crisis response systems, focused on the themes of homelessness prevention and diversion, rapid re-housing, and effective approaches to emergency housing. The conference will also include plenary sessions on recent multinational studies of Housing First research demonstrations, and cost of homelessness studies. This event is underwritten by the Dana and Andrew Stone Chair in Social Policy at the University of Pennsylvania and co-sponsored by the VA National Center on Homelessness among Veterans, the European Observatory on Homelessness, the Canadian Homelessness Research Network and the Australian Urban and Housing Research Institute.

The conference program will provide homelessness researchers with the opportunity to present research on theoretically significant models, best practices, evaluations, and related research.

12th Annual International Conference on Health Economics, Management & Policy

The Health  Research Unit of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) will hold its 12th Annual International Conference on Health Economics, Management & Policy 24-27 June 2013, Athens, Greece.

The aim of the conference is to bring together scholars, researchers and students from all areas of health economics, management and policy. Areas of interest include (but are not confined to): Equity and Poverty in Health, Pharmaceutical Economics, Quality of Life, Economic Evaluation, Health Care Reforms, Social Security, School Health Programs, Health Law and Health Related Business.

The Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) was established in 1995 as an independent academic association with the mission to become a forum, where academics and researchers - from all over the world - could meet in Athens to exchange ideas on their research and to discuss future developments in their disciplines. Since 1995, ATINER has organized more than 200 international conferences, symposiums and events. It has also published approximately 150 books. Academically, the Institute consists of five Research Divisions and twenty-three Research Units. Each Research Unit organizes an annual conference and undertakes various small and large research projects. Symposium on Disability, Technology and Rehabilitation in Low and Middle Income Countries

June 27th & 28th, 2013 Seattle, Washington, USA

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington will host the symposium, Disability, Technology and Rehabilitation in Low and Middle Income Countries, on June 27 & 28th, 2013 at the University of Washington. Building off of the 2009 and 2010 workshops on Technology & Disability in the Developing World, the 2013 symposium will expand topic areas to include rehabilitation services.

Symposium objective

To bring together researchers, clinicians, consumers, consumer led organizations, policy makers, technology developers and providers, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders who focus on improving and increasing access to technology and rehabilitation products and services with the goal of ensuring full inclusion and participation for people with disabilities in low-resourced communities in low and middle income countries.

Across the broad areas of technology and rehabilitation in limited resourced environments, we are particularly interested in the following specific topics:

■Assistive technology and accessible information and communication technology
■Service delivery models
■Human resource development
■Policy, regulatory and funding mechanisms for supporting provision of technology and rehabilitation services
■Research and evidence-based practice
