Aging and Diseases of Aging

22 Oct 2012 through 27 Oct 2012 Tokyo, Japan

LANGUAGE NOTE: This meeting will be conducted in English.

Age-related diseases and disabilities, such as cancer, diabetes, and neuronal degeneration, pose an ever increasing social and economic burden worldwide. Fortunately, the last decades have witnessed dramatic progress in our understanding of the aging process. Genetic studies in particular have helped elucidate some of the molecular pathways that regulate the aging and offered new insights into the treatment of age-related diseases. However, there is still much to be learned and further progress in addressing the unique challenges of the aging population will require new insights and novel approaches. In order to accelerate the discovery process, this Keystone Symposia meeting will cover essential aspects of the aging processes, including cell signaling pathways, DNA stability, protein homeostasis, stem cells and cellular senescence. Each plenary session will emphasize innovative findings from a variety of models in basic research areas and link them to age-related disease and frailty. The ultimate goal is to provide an opportunity for attendees to communicate and promote an integrated understanding of aging and age-related diseases. The program for this meeting is highly likely to attract a wide variety of investigators, many of whom might not otherwise interact.

Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications Conference on Mathematics of Medical Devices and Surgical Procedures

Monday 17 - Wednesday 19 September 2012 University College London United Kingdom

Mathematics is playing an ever increasing role in the area of health and medicine, through the use of modelling, statistics, and virtual simulations. These mathematical tools are becoming invaluable in testing the feasibility of surgical procedures and medical devices prior to clinical trials. Furthermore, there is a very realistic possibility over the next twenty years that computer models coupled to patient-specific imaging will be used in real time in the clinical environment to directly advise on treatment strategies. The aim of this conference is to bring together the diverse community of mathematicians, engineers, physicists, clinicians involved in using applied sciences and mathematics to develop and use medical devices to discuss both the latest research and the needs of the clinical community and patients.

The topics that will be discussed will broadly include cardiovascular devices, medical imaging, ophthalmology, cell biology, disease transmission, orthopaedic, advanced simulations, as well as health in ageing. The conference programme will include keynote speakers drawn from both clinical and mathematical communities, along with contributed presentations and poster sessions. The programme will also include breakout sessions in certain topics as well as refreshment breaks for informal discussions. Social events include a drinks reception and a conference dinner.

Our Future is Aging: Current Research on Knowledge, Practice and Policy Research Conference

Our Future is Aging: Current Research on Knowledge, Practice and Policy Research Conference

November 21st-23rd, 2012 Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

"Our Future is Aging: Current Research on Knowledge, Practice and Policy" research conference will be held on November 21-23, 2012, Delta Halifax Hotel, Halifax, Nova Scotia. This Conference will bring together researchers, academics, service providers, decision makers, artists, students, policy analysts and members of the community to share the diversity of perspectives and approaches to aging research within the Atlantic region and throughout Canada.

The Conference is being hosted by the Nova Scotia Centre on Aging, Mount Saint Vincent University as part of its 20th anniversary activities. Our Centre, in collaboration with a planning group of reseachers and representatives from practice and policy from throughout the region, are working to offer a valuable conference experience for you.

Atlantic Canada has the oldest populations in the country, and there is significant scholarly research on aging underway in the region that is not well known. This conference provides a unique opportunity for emerging and established researchers, practitioners, and policy makers in the region who are interested and engaged in age-related research to come together to learn about, and be inspired by, one another’s work. It offers an occasion to learn about existing collaborations in aging research, and foster new ones.

About the Organization

The NSCA is a research centre affiliated with the Department of Family Studies & Gerontology at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, that was established in 1992. Through research, education and community engagement, the NSCA advances knowledge on aging to inform social policy and practice and enhance the quality of life of older people and their families. For more information on the NSCA visit www.msvu.ca/nsca.

2012 marks our 20th anniversary, and we are planning a special celebration. Our anniversary theme is Our Future is Aging. We chose this theme because it captures where we as a society are headed (our population is aging) and it reaffirms the work and mission of the NSCA to generate knowledge that informs policy and practice on aging related issues. Our Future is Aging: Current Research on Knowledge, Practice and Policy, is one event in the 20th Anniversary program of activities. This research conference supports two of the Centre’s strategic directions by fostering research collaborations and engaging in knowledge translation activities.

Travel Bursaries
If funding permits a limited number of travel bursaries may be available to students traveling to the conference. These bursaries will be distributed on a first-come-first serve basis, and will require the completion and submission of a student travel bursary form. Students are encouraged to identify their intent to apply for a travel bursary on the Online Submission form.

5th International Conference on Pervasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments (PETRA 2012)

June 6-8, 2012 Crete Island, Greece

Conference Theme
The PETRA Conference brings together different types of technology to address an important social and healthcare issue: as the world's population ages, there is growing interest in solutions for the in- home care of the elderly as well as for the care of people with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other disabilities or traumas. PETRA (which means "stone" in Greek) reflects the needs of the domestic environment, or "Oikos" as it was known in ancient Greece, but from a technological perspective. People's living environments are particularly important in an increasingly crowded and complex world where the need for inclusiveness and connectivity with the rest of the world is key. PETRA addresses the fact that, as people grow older, they will increasingly rely on technology to be able to stay in their homes.
