Relational Selves and Families in Medicine: Gender Perspectives

Conference Dec 10-12, 2012, Linköping, Sweden

In many cases, there is only one patient in the patient-health care professional encounter. This, however, is not always the case. As some examples, two individuals may seek medical assistance in order to conceive a child together and more individuals may be involved if a sibling donates egg or sperm to a family-member and her/his partner.

Many other examples can be given of encounters and treatments that involve more than one patient and one health care professional. When the patient is a minor child, parent(s) may face difficult treatment decisions as regards medical treatment for their children. If two parents are involved in the decision, they may not always agree on what is the best treatment for their child. And what say does the child have in terms of treatments? As yet another example, cases of sibling organ donation where a sibling donates an organ to a brother or sister highlight how intimately family members can become involved in each other’s medical treatment. Finally, the topic of families in medicine can be pertinent in relation to aging and health care needs in later life, where relatives can become thoroughly involved in this care and where gender roles can feed into this care work.

Still, comparably little attention has been given to the role of families in medical encounters, treatment decisions, care work and illness experiences.

The aim of the conference

Relational selves and families in medicine: Gender Perspectives is to bring together scholars who examine the role of extended families, parents, siblings, children, and close friends in medicine, and this with a gender perspective. We welcome contributions from scholars with interdisciplinary and various disciplinary backgrounds within the social sciences and the humanities. We specially invite contributions that focus on (but are not limited to):

Assisted reproductive technologies, surrogacy, egg-, sperm- and embryo donation, adoption and other ways of becoming parents

The welfare of the child in medicine

Conceptions and norms of parenthood in medicine

Corrective measures: what is ‘corrected’ and why, in children’s and teen-agers’ bodies?

Ageing and care in later life

- Relational conceptions of selves and relational autonomy

- The interplay between self and others, and how this can inform the illness experience as well as experiences of hope, strength and health.

2012 International Glycoprotein Storage Disease Conference

07/28/2012

2012 International Glycoprotein Storage Disease Conference

The International Society for Mannosidosis & Related Storage Diseases (ISMRD) is proud to announce The 2012 International Conference for Glycoprotein Storage Diseases.

The Scientific/Family conference will be 28th – 29th July. The scientific and family meetings will be running concurrently.

Natural History Clinic days are Friday July 27th and Monday July 30th

The Conference will take place in Charleston, South Carolina at the Crowne Plaza Hotel

Alongside this meeting we will be hosting the extension of the Natural History Study (see dates above). These clinics will be held in Dr Cathey's Charleston Office.

ISMRD's primary mission has always been two-fold: to support families throughout the world affected by a Glycoprotein & Related Storage Disease, and to promote opportunities to further scientific and clinical understanding of the underlying mechanisms resulting in these diseases. In our view, the ultra-orphan nature of these disorders requires a synergy between both aspects of this mission if therapies and treatments are ever to occur.

Comics & Medicine: Navigating the Margins

22-24 July 2012 Toronto, Canada

Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto

Biomedical Communications Program, University of Toronto

Office of the Vice-Principal, Research, University of Toronto Mississauga

The third international interdisciplinary conference* on comics and medicine will continue to explore the intersection of sequential visual arts and medicine. This year we will highlight perspectives that are often under-represented in graphic narratives, such as depictions of the Outsider or Other in the context of issues such as barriers to healthcare, the stigma of mental illness and disability, and the silent burden of caretaking.

The conference will feature keynote presentations by comics creators Joyce Brabner and Joyce Farmer. Brabner, a comics artist and social activist, collaborated with her late husband Harvey Pekar on the graphic novel Our Cancer Year (1994), which won a Harvey Award for best graphic novel. Farmer is a veteran of the underground comics scene who nursed her elderly parents through dementia and decline as shown in her graphic memoir Special Exits (2010), which won the National Cartoonists Society award for graphic novels.

Possible topics:

Graphic pathographies of illness and disability
The use of comics in medical education
The use of comics in patient care
Depictions of the illness experience from the perspective of loved ones and family caregivers
The interface of graphic medicine and other visual arts in popular culture
Ethical implications of using comics to educate the public
Ethical implications of patient representation in comics by healthcare providers
Trends in international use of comics in healthcare settings
The role of comics in provider/patient communication
Comics as virtual support groups for patients and caregivers
The use of comics in bioethics discussions and education

We envision this gathering as a collaboration among humanities scholars, comics scholars, comics creators, healthcare professionals, and comics enthusiasts.

13th International Fragile X Conference

July 25-29, 2012 Miami, Florida

The National Fragile X Foundation’s biennial international conference is highly regarded and well-known for bringing together families, researchers, doctors, therapists and educators in a setting that is specifically designed to optimize interaction among families and professionals. Increased collaboration between researchers, improved treatment skills of professionals, optimized development of individuals affected by Fragile X and increased understanding and well-being of those impacted by the disorders are the most significant outcomes often sited by previous conference attendees.

The first International Fragile X Conference was a two day event in 1987 held in Denver Colorado with about 150 attendees. Since then it has passed through cities including Albuquerque, Portland, Asheville, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, Atlanta and Detroit with growing attendance numbers. 2012 will bring the 13th International Fragile X Conference to Miami, FL where we expect over 1,000 attendees.

We present a unique opportunity where researchers and parents can interact throughout the conference. Many a researcher have commented on the experience of socializing with the parents of children with Fragile X, and how the experience has motivated them or reinvigorated their enthusiasm to make a difference in the lives of persons with this disability. The majority of the conference sessions are “Family-Friendly” and cover all three Fragile X conditions (FXS, FXTAS, FXPOI), with the greatest number of sessions focusing on FXS. In addition to the family-friendly sessions there are many scientific and technical sessions. Some of the benefits from attending include:

Discover the latest research by some of the world’s leading Fragile X experts.
Learn new techniques, behavioral interventions and coping strategies.
Connect with researchers clinicians, educators, psychologists and parents.
Get the support you need.
Start a new lifelong friendship and reconnect with old friends.

The objectives of the conference are:

To provide a forum in which professionals from the Fragile X and intellectual disabilities fields can present their scientific, clinical or scholarly work;
To present a general program that will be informative and of interest to all conference participants;
To facilitate the exchange of research, intervention strategies and information relating to all Fragile X-associated Disorders (FXD) including fragile X syndrome (FXS), fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) and fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency (FXPOI).

Presentation topics will include medical treatments, speech, language and occupational therapies, educational techniques, opportunities for self-determination and independence, genetic counseling strategies and mental health interventions throughout the lifespan.

Based on the ongoing development of new therapies, the conference will include a focus on:

Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions (current and anticipated)
Evaluation tools
Evolving screening and diagnostic technologies

The conference will also highlight basic science presentations on:

The functions of FMRP
The molecular and cellular mechanisms in FXS, FXTAS, and FXPOI
Studies in animal models of FXD

The conference will include a wide variety of other subjects including:

Alternative interventions
Public policy and legislative advocacy
Legal and ethical issues
Sibling issues
