Anthropology and Personalised Medicine: Impacting the Future of Comprehensive Healthcare

8th-12th September 2013, Inter University Centre, Don Frana Bulića 4, 20 000 Dubrovnik, Croatia

Objectives:

1. To delineate anthropological perspectives on biological constructs of diversity such as “race” and their historical and current impact on the development and practice of personalized medicine.

2. To delineate anthropological sociocultural constructs of diversity such as racism and ethnocentrism, bioethics, health equity and disparities and their historical and current impact on the development and practice of personalized medicine.

3. To examine anthropological contributions to the molecular genetic, population genetic and epigenetic foundations of personalized medicine using Croatian populations as an exemplar.

4. Through the dual lenses of medicine and anthropology discuss new developments and projected epidemiological impact of personalized medicine on metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cancers, forensic sciences, and other diseases and conditions.

5.To develop a comprehensive approach to the dissemination, tracking and assessment of the impact of the conference using the Becker Model.

Cancer in Africa: Bridging Science and Humanity

21-24 November 2013 Durban, South Africa

The African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer is pleased to announce its 9th International Conference on Cancer in Africa. It will take place in Durban, South Africa from 21-24 November 2013 at the International Convention Centre Durban.

Held every two years, the AORTIC conferences provide a unique platform to bring together leading African and international health care professionals in cancer care, advocates, leaders in Government, and various members of the international health industry and global cancer community to meet and discuss cancer-related matters and proffer solutions to significantly reduce the impact of cancer in Africa and indeed around the world. To make a difference, AORTIC invites you, as a committed member of the international cancer control community, to contribute to and listen to world-renowned speakers, to network with colleagues and professionals from all over the world, and to be exposed to the latest research findings in the cancer arena.

The target audience for AORTIC’s 9th International Cancer Conference is anyone interested in the cancer burden in Africa, including physicians, nurses, social workers, researchers, and representatives of NGOs and international businesses.

The programme will address cutting edge cancer management and basic science and clinical research on cancers relevant to Africa. This will include the following topics: National Cancer Control Plans (NCCPs), Cancer Registration, Basic Sciences, Genetics, Epigenetics, Site-specific Cancers, Biomarkers, Radiation, Chemotherapy, Epidemiology, HIV-AIDS-related Cancers, Haematology, Cancer Advocacy, Tobacco-related Cancers, Paediatric Oncology, Palliative Care, and Oncology Nursing.

EMBO Conference Series Cancer Genomics

European Molecular Biology Laboratory Heidelberg, Germany Sunday 3 November - Tuesday 5 November 2013

Registration deadline: Thursday 19 September 2013

Topics

Cancer Genetics
Functional Genomics & Epigenomics of Cancer
Systems Biology & Integrated Analyses of Cancer
Cancer Model Systems & Systems Pharmacology
Translation & Clinical Impact of Cancer Genomics

This conference will provide an opportunity to learn about, and keep up-to-date with, the rapidly progressing area of cancer genomics. It will cover presentations from cancer genome projects, the areas of cancer functional genomics, systems biology, cancer mouse models, and the translation and clinical impact of scientific results obtained. The meeting will bring together leading scientists from across these areas for a unique opportunity to interact and stimulate further integration of these efforts.

European Cancer Genomics research is particularly strong in the Heidelberg area, with three International Cancer Genome Consortium (www.icgc.org) projects being currently pursued with significant participation from Heidelberg institutions, including EMBL. As in our 2011 meeting, a large number of renowned speakers will be invited, with a strong representation of overseas speakers. The atmosphere at the conference will make this an exceptional event with cutting edge science, extensive scientific discussions, and ample possibilities for meetings between and after sessions, to facilitate in-depth discussions and new collaborations.
