7th International Congress on Glaucoma Surgery

February 20-22, 2014 Singapore

The 7th International Congress on Glaucoma Surgery (ICGS), will be held in Singapore, from February 20-22, 2014. Over the last 12 years, the ICGS has become synonymous with the highest caliber scientific meeting in the field of Glaucoma.

We are expecting around 1000, including the virtual who’s who of the world of glaucoma: a multinational cast of key glaucoma leaders, premier guest speakers, and corporate representatives from all glaucoma-related fields. Our target audience includes glaucoma specialists, general ophthalmologists, and related professionals from all over the world.

The world of glaucoma surgery is evolving at a dynamic pace that requires harmonization with research, technological advances, device innovations, and technical refinements in the surgical management of glaucoma. With laser and surgical therapy being the prime focus, the ICGS also endeavors to incorporate all aspects of glaucoma care, including epidemiology, diagnostics and medical therapy in order to be increasingly relevant to the glaucoma practitioner and researcher. This unique scientific meeting generates great enthusiasm and is renowned for garnering wide spread interest and enrolment.

Chikungunya 2013

28-30 October, 2013 Langkawi Island, Malaysia

The recent re-emergence of Chikungunya virus led to millions of affected people worldwide. For the first time, local transmission from mosquitoes were reported outside the tropics, in Italy and France. As the global distribution of Aedes mosquito vectors continues to expand, Chikungunya is now a global threat, and no longer a relatively neglected infection confined to the tropics.

We are therefore pleased to invite all those interested in Chikungunya to this major conference focusing on Chikungunya and related alphaviruses. A broad range of topics will be addressed by leading experts, and the conference will appeal to virologists, clinicians, epidemiologists and entomologists. There will also be opportunities for selected participants to present papers at oral and poster sessions, including a number of Young Investigator Awards.

The conference will be organised jointly by the Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre, of University Malaya in Malaysia, and the Integrated Chikungunya Research (ICRES) consortium, funded by the European Union Seventh Framework Programme.

Complexity: Researching Alcohol and Other Drugs in a Multiple World

21-23 August 2013 Aarhus, Denmark

The last decade has seen the idea of complexity gain force in social science and epidemiological research. As social problems of all kinds prove less amenable to change than is sometimes suggested by the reductionist demands of orthodox positivist approaches, theory and method have turned to ways of articulating the elusive, uncertain and complex.

For some, such as the science and technology studies scholars Annemarie Mol and John Law (2002), complexity means multiplicity rather than unity, realities rather than reality, distinct but overlapping worlds, logics and orders. Implicated, too, are questions about the relation between order and chaos, and the validity of binaries of any kind, including that of simplicity and complexity itself.

This conference offers a forum in which the issues and dilemmas of complexity in alcohol and other drug research can be explored. It welcomes research based on quantitative and qualitative methods, and encourages innovative use of methods, concepts and theoretical approaches. Following the conference, Contemporary Drug Problems, an interdisciplinary quarterly and one of the driving forces behind the conference, will publish a special issue featuring selected papers from the conference.

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML) is, in the general population, a rare but serious demyelinating disease of the brain, often resulting in severe disability or death and is caused by infection of oligodendrocytes by the JC polyomavirus (JCV). It is believed that fifty to sixty percent of the population is sero-positive for JCV, indicating exposure to the virus. Despite the high prevalence of JCV infection in the human population, which typically leads to a chronic, asymptomatic infection, incidence of PML in the general population is very low. The pathogenesis of PML is not well understood. It is believed that the development of PML, while dependent on the presence of JCV, is the result of a confluence of viral and host risk factors, which may include an altered or compromised immune system such as in individuals with HIV-1 infection/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), or patients undergoing chronic immunosuppressive therapies after organ transplantation, for treatment of lymphomas, or for autoimmune conditions, such as MS.

This 2-day conference will bring together basic science researchers, clinicians, physicians, epidemiologists, and regulatory experts from academia, industry, and government to address novel issues, current challenges, and future directions of basic and clinical research relevant to the mitigation, potential future cure, and risk stratification of PML. Topics of discussion will include JCV virology, PML pathogenesis, risk stratification and disease diagnosis and management. The meeting will feature a series of plenary lectures, short talk presentations selected from submitted abstracts, a poster session, and a closing panel discussion.

Inhaled Particles XI (IPXI)

23 to 25 September 2013 Nottingham, United Kingdom

Inhaled Particles XI (IPXI), organised by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) and to be held in the city of Nottingham, UK on 23 to 25 September 2013 is the latest in a long line of highly successful and prestigious meetings and is the oldest ongoing symposium series.

The first Inhaled Particles conference was held in Oxford in 1960 and ever since the meetings have been aimed at attracting leaders and students in all of the scientific disciplines associated with particle-related lung disease. Over the intervening years, Inhaled Particles has been the event at which all of the key developments in occupational and public health associated with airborne particles have been aired and debated. Its integrative approach to the science of particle-mediated lung disease is a distinctive and successful feature of the Inhaled Particles Conference series. IPXI seeks to continue this fine tradition and invites all researchers who work on exposure, metrology, epidemiology and toxicology of particle-associated diseases to visit Nottingham, in September 2013 to attend the latest in Inhaled Particles meeting.

The meeting is multi-disciplinary in its approach to addressing topics within exposure (e.g. controls, instrumentation / measurement), hazard (e.g. deposition/ clearance of inhaled particles, fate / mechanisms of disease) and risk assessment (e.g. health impacts and links with policy) of particles brought together to under the theme of human occupational health. The meeting brings together leading researchers on the adverse effects of particles on the lungs and extrapulmonary target tissues to showcase cutting edge research and debate solutions to the challenges faced within particle research and risk assessment.
