Anthropology and Personalised Medicine: Impacting the Future of Comprehensive Healthcare

8th-12th September 2013, Inter University Centre, Don Frana Bulića 4, 20 000 Dubrovnik, Croatia

Objectives:

1. To delineate anthropological perspectives on biological constructs of diversity such as “race” and their historical and current impact on the development and practice of personalized medicine.

2. To delineate anthropological sociocultural constructs of diversity such as racism and ethnocentrism, bioethics, health equity and disparities and their historical and current impact on the development and practice of personalized medicine.

3. To examine anthropological contributions to the molecular genetic, population genetic and epigenetic foundations of personalized medicine using Croatian populations as an exemplar.

4. Through the dual lenses of medicine and anthropology discuss new developments and projected epidemiological impact of personalized medicine on metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cancers, forensic sciences, and other diseases and conditions.

5.To develop a comprehensive approach to the dissemination, tracking and assessment of the impact of the conference using the Becker Model.

5th International Conference on Fixed Combination in the Treatment of Hypertension, Dyslipidemia and Diabetes Mellitus
Thailand
11/21/2013

5th International Conference on Fixed Combination in the Treatment of Hypertension, Dyslipidemia and Diabetes Mellitus

21-24 November, 2013 Bangkok, Thailand

Fixed combination has recently made a comeback as an initial therapy in the treatment of hypertension. The additive or synergistic effect of combination therapy fully lowers blood pressure in patients who tend to have less than full response to one component only. Antihypertensive monotherapy does not address the multifactorial nature of hypertension as a disease with many pathways; using more than one drug makes more therapeutic sense, as combined agents cover more than one etiology.

Importance of anti-diabetic and anti-lipidemic combinations should be emphasized as well: Many patients with diabetes mellitus may also be treated with dual pharmacological therapy as fixed combination: two or more drugs acting on different pathophysiological process is often  necessary to reach  early and sustained achievement of individualized  glycemic targets. At the same time choosing the safest option to avoid hypoglycemia is of paramount importance compared with loose pill, both statin and anti-diabetic combination therapies may also have better adherence, improved satisfaction and lower drug costs.

The conference is intended for experts in the fields of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, internal medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology, hyperlipidemia, family medicine, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and physicians’ assistants. All are invited to explore the current and future role of fixed combinations in the treatment of hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes.

World Diabetes Congress
Australia
12/02/2013

World Diabetes Congress

The next World Diabetes Congress will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Melbourne, Australia from 2 to 6 December 2013.

The International Diabetes Federation is the global voice for people with diabetes and those at risk. Twenty years after the World Diabetes Congress in Japan, the Western Pacific Region is again in the global health spotlight and is why we have chosen Melbourne to host the World Diabetes Congress in 2013.

Today, more than a third of all people with diabetes are found in the Western Pacific Region. It is also the region that has the highest number of undiagnosed cases and the highest number of deaths attributable to diabetes.

Up Close and Personalized, International Congress on Personalized Medicine

July 25-28, 2013 Paris, France

Personalized Medicine is revolutionizing the medical world. Understanding and integrating genetic and molecular information with traditional clinical knowledge is the hallmark of this transformation. At present much of the medical practice is based on standards of care derived from the epidemiologic studies of large cohorts that do not take into account the individual’s genetic, proteomic, and metabolic characteristics. Furthermore, in spite of efforts to develop data-driven, expert–based, clinical decision support systems, there are no clear and simple means to disseminate new findings into clinical practice.

Following the great success of the meeting in Florence Italy last year, the main focus of the second Up Close and Personalized Congress is to examine the essential clinical, imaging, genomic, proteomic, metabolomic, pharmacogenomic and biomarker data necessary to predict, prevent and treat major medical conditions concerning metabolism (diabetes and obesity) and cancer. As in the first meeting one of the key themes will be to explore bio-informatic tools, algorithms, decision support systems and other new platforms for disease prediction and better tailoring treatment modeling to the individual patient. Furthermore, we will discuss health policy issues such as barriers for implementing Personalized Medicine, and quality assurance.

Probiotics, Prebiotics, and the Host Microbiome: The Science of Translation

Wednesday, June 12, 2013 | 7:45 AM - 6:00 PM The New York Academy of Sciences

Presented by The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences and The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics

In the past decade, researchers have observed a strong convergence of prebiotics, probiotics, and the microbiome in areas of host physiology such as the immune system, metabolism, and neurological function. This 1-day conference will serve as a neutral forum to critically examine the potential population-wide economic and public health benefits of translating this research into innovative functional foods and biotherapeutics for a broad spectrum of conditions including obesity, diabetes, inflammatory and gastrointestinal disease, and malnutrition. Participants will apply the rigorous standards of evidence-based medicine and evidence-based nutrition to evaluate and outline novel research and policy strategies to advance the incorporation of prebiotics- and probiotics-based applications to improve public health.
