2012 National Refugee and Immigrant Conference: Issues and Innovations

Thursday, October 18, 2012-Friday, October 19, 2012 Chicago, Illinois

The aim of this national conference is to identify issues, emphasize best practices, and highlight innovations by providing those who work with refugees and immigrants an opportunity to learn from and to network with one another.

Families of refugees and immigrants in the U.S. must do their best to manage transitions into new communities. Many of these families encounter financial hardship, difficulty in gaining employment, cultural adjustments, health and mental issues, intergenerational conflicts, and the stresses of unfamiliar school experiences.

Services for preschool and K-12 refugee and immigrant youth and their families may be compromised by differing perceptions and misunderstandings (by both the families and those who provide services) concerning the cultural adjustment process; health, health care, and nutrition; public education enrollment and assessment, academic roles and expectations, the provision of bilingual education services and special education services, when appropriate; and American education law requirements.

To address these and other refugee and immigrant issues, individuals and nonprofit organizations need access to resources on successful practices and processes as well as solutions for challenges in refugee and immigrant integration.

Efforts to help youth and families will have a better chance of succeeding if they are based on shared understandings and collaborative partnerships among families, schools, health and mental health providers. In particular, as delineated in federal Title III of No Child Left Behind legislation, linking educators and families together can provide positive academic experiences and successful integration of refugee and immigrant children into our society.

Organizations also need to build their capacity to assist families by gaining resources through grant writing, and assisting adults to become self-sufficient in this economy through employment services and innovative practices such as microenterprise.

9th International Congress on Mental Disorders & Other Non-Motor features in Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders

The 9th International MDPD Congress is a highly regarded meeting the aim of which is to facilitate discussions on the latest developments in the understanding of non-motor aspects in Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.

This premier meeting on dementia and other non-motor impairments related to Parkinson’s disease features a splendid scientific programme that will focus on Parkinson’s dementia and of dementia with Lewy bodies, and also the biochemical and genetic factors involved, as well as on autonomic, sensory and basic aspects. These aspects in non-PD movement disorders will also be discussed.

The most useful feature about IFMAD meetings is that current clinical hot topics and new data are presented in a balanced format, adequately dissected and discussed in a collegiate atmosphere, and digested over dinner.

Cognitive Enhancers: 22nd Neuropharmacology Conference

Official Satellite to the 2012 Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience

11-12 October 2012 New Orleans, Louisiana

Cognitive enhancement has become a subject of considerable research and, both in neuroscience and society at large, growing controversy. This satellite meeting will survey progress in the field from attempts to facilitate the substrates of memory and cognition in animal models to clinical studies targeted at major psychiatric disorders. Attendees will accordingly have a first-hand opportunity to learn about the broad spectrum of enhancement research ranging from epigenetics through synaptic plasticity and brain networks to behavior. Individual sessions include both cutting edge work on currently marketed drugs and experiments using novel, mechanism-based compounds. The program will therefore be of interest to those interested in present and future therapeutic prospects for autism, age-related cognitive decline, addiction, and depression. It also directly addresses the possibility of enhancement in normal subjects, a contentious issue that affects much of the neuroscience community.

Grievings 2012

Grievings 2012, the next edition of the Annual International Conference of the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures of the University of Silesia in Katowice, will be held in Ustroń, Poland, 20-23 September 2012.

Although generally resented and deemed unfavourable for individuals, societies and nations, grief, grievance, and grieving, along with a complex list of epithets that could in various situations, under varying circumstances, accompany them – racial grief, political grievance, protracted grieving, chronic grief, traumatic, unresolved grievance – nevertheless occupy a notorious place in culture and its manifestations in literature, art, history, science, or politics.

Confused experiences of melancholia, grief, nostalgia, shame, anguish, hate, longing, and jealousy continue to permeate cultural productions across historical moments, literary epochs, and political sympathies.

It is these veneers that we intend to uncover and dismantle, thus – dissolve, or, assuming yet a different approach, assemble into larger entities exhibiting common patterns of formulaic imagining.

The name Grievings comes with several emphases in mind – we place great impact on attempts to explore questions of how globalization has affected modes of grieving, how it has altered the subjects/objects over which we grieve, and finally, how grievances have come to adopt the shape of ultimatums, sometimes escalating into forms of sabotage, schizophrenia, or even outright military conflict.
