Society for Acupuncture Research 2013 Conference

Impact of Acupuncture Research on 21st Century Health Care

April 19-21, 2013 University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA

Co-sponsored by: University of Michigan Department of Anesthesiology and Program in Integrative Medicine

The rising incidence of chronic disease and stress-related illness in the West has led to an increased utilization of acupuncture
as a contemporary health care option. A major reason for this increase in usage is that acupuncture has heeded the call for evidence-based medicine, with a broad range of clinical trials, surveys of safety, and basic science studies of physiological action all contributing to its growing acceptance. The 2013 SAR conference will explore diverse areas of acupuncture research, emphasizing their potential to affect health policy decisions and enhance clinical practice.

-- Leading researchers from the U.S. and abroad will present keynote addresses, participate in symposia and panels, and lead workshops assessing recent progress, challenges and opportunities for the field.

-- Representative speakers from the national and international acupuncture research communities will present original data in three major areas: clinical research, basic science and research methodology.

-- A pre-conference workshop will focus on “Current status and issues in acupuncture research for practitioners, students, and educators new to this field.”

See www.acupunctureresearch.org for more details about the conference program as available.

Somatics & Technology Conference 2012

23 June 2012, University of Chichester, Chichester, United Kingdom

Somatics, referring to a set of body-based contemporary practices has achieved widespread recognition as a form of bodily knowledge. It coincides with a resurgence of philosophical and scientific interest in the role that the somatic plays in human thought and experience, and its reach encompasses contemporary arts that challenge the primacy of digital logic through the promotion of a more body-based and sensual approach to technology (Shusterman 2008; Damasio 1994).

This event to be held at the University of Chichester will integrate critical, theoretical and practical perspectives on the conference’s theme through keynote presentations by international specialists from the visual arts, dance and new media, with roundtable papers led by the speakers, conference papers and an exciting series of workshops, art exhibits and performances.

Workshop I: Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an important part of medical science in the world. Chinese Medicine is good at prevention and prediction of diseases. But the typical methods of TCM mostly rely on doctors’ empirical experience, and a sophisticated collection of theories in a seemingly different paradigm from today’s mainstream western medicine. This might greatly restrict its applications and promotions. The development of information technologies has promoted the development and applications of TCM. It is becoming a revolutionary research method and technology development for data collection and management, data mining and analysis. This workshop will bring together researchers all of world who are interested in TCM to share research results, advances and practical experience, with the focus on using information technologies to solve issues on TCM. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to

Modeling and Information standardization in TCM
Information management and sharing in TCM hospitals
Informationalization of health management and services in TCM
Architecture of healthcare information system for TCM
Development and applications of digital TCM techniques and equipments
Methods of diagnosis and treatment evaluation system in TCM
Prediction and monitoring modeling in TCM
Data gathering techniques in TCM
Analysis techniques for the clinical TCM data
Information techniques for the evaluation of personalized TCM treatment

Workshop II: Industrial Applications and Services on eHealth

Information technologies are becoming an ever-increasingly important part in the healthcare industry. Many companies around the world have successfully developed proprietary systems, tools and devices for their targeted applications in eHealth. But from an industry point of view, technologies alone are not enough for a significant advancement in an emerging market. How to combine government, medical institutions、insurance and other healthcare service providers together is a challenging issue. In particular, how to provide eHealth services with new service models to special demographic people, such as aging, maternal and children, disabled and rural people, are especially challenging. The goal of this workshop is to bring industrial partners together to share their experiences and exchange ideas in their practice of providing eHealth services. Topics include, but not limited to

eHealth service models for aging, maternal and children, disabled, and rural people
eHealth service deployment case study
eHealth and the Internet-of-Things
Person Health Records (PHRs) management and its applications
Chronic disease management through eHealth
Information sharing and interaction between different institutions, such as insurance, bank, government, hospitals for eHealth

Comics & Medicine: Navigating the Margins

22-24 July 2012 Toronto, Canada

Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto

Biomedical Communications Program, University of Toronto

Office of the Vice-Principal, Research, University of Toronto Mississauga

The third international interdisciplinary conference* on comics and medicine will continue to explore the intersection of sequential visual arts and medicine. This year we will highlight perspectives that are often under-represented in graphic narratives, such as depictions of the Outsider or Other in the context of issues such as barriers to healthcare, the stigma of mental illness and disability, and the silent burden of caretaking.

The conference will feature keynote presentations by comics creators Joyce Brabner and Joyce Farmer. Brabner, a comics artist and social activist, collaborated with her late husband Harvey Pekar on the graphic novel Our Cancer Year (1994), which won a Harvey Award for best graphic novel. Farmer is a veteran of the underground comics scene who nursed her elderly parents through dementia and decline as shown in her graphic memoir Special Exits (2010), which won the National Cartoonists Society award for graphic novels.

Possible topics:

Graphic pathographies of illness and disability
The use of comics in medical education
The use of comics in patient care
Depictions of the illness experience from the perspective of loved ones and family caregivers
The interface of graphic medicine and other visual arts in popular culture
Ethical implications of using comics to educate the public
Ethical implications of patient representation in comics by healthcare providers
Trends in international use of comics in healthcare settings
The role of comics in provider/patient communication
Comics as virtual support groups for patients and caregivers
The use of comics in bioethics discussions and education

We envision this gathering as a collaboration among humanities scholars, comics scholars, comics creators, healthcare professionals, and comics enthusiasts.
