Second International Workshop on Design & Implementation of Independent & Assisted Living Technology – DIILT ’12

At 26th Annual HCI Conference of the British Computer Society HCI 2012 - People and Computers XXVI

Birmingham, U.K, 10th-14th September 2012

The aim of this workshop is to bring together experts, academics and practitioners to share experiences and expertise of assisted living technology, telecare or telehealth implementations and evaluations.

Discussions will focus on the challenges and best practices in evaluating the impact of practical and pragmatic implementations and large scale roll-out of health technologies 'in the wild' (i.e outside of the lab and beyond pilot studies).

The workshop will review case studies, trials, design, development and implementations of technologies reaching end-users in their homes to support, tele-care, telehealth, independent or assisted living. The aim is to assess how technologies can be integrated into people's homes and communities and how resulting benefits or disbenefits on people's health and wellbeing can be objectively measured and evaluated.

2012 National Refugee and Immigrant Conference: Issues and Innovations

Thursday, October 18, 2012-Friday, October 19, 2012 Chicago, Illinois

The aim of this national conference is to identify issues, emphasize best practices, and highlight innovations by providing those who work with refugees and immigrants an opportunity to learn from and to network with one another.

Families of refugees and immigrants in the U.S. must do their best to manage transitions into new communities. Many of these families encounter financial hardship, difficulty in gaining employment, cultural adjustments, health and mental issues, intergenerational conflicts, and the stresses of unfamiliar school experiences.

Services for preschool and K-12 refugee and immigrant youth and their families may be compromised by differing perceptions and misunderstandings (by both the families and those who provide services) concerning the cultural adjustment process; health, health care, and nutrition; public education enrollment and assessment, academic roles and expectations, the provision of bilingual education services and special education services, when appropriate; and American education law requirements.

To address these and other refugee and immigrant issues, individuals and nonprofit organizations need access to resources on successful practices and processes as well as solutions for challenges in refugee and immigrant integration.

Efforts to help youth and families will have a better chance of succeeding if they are based on shared understandings and collaborative partnerships among families, schools, health and mental health providers. In particular, as delineated in federal Title III of No Child Left Behind legislation, linking educators and families together can provide positive academic experiences and successful integration of refugee and immigrant children into our society.

Organizations also need to build their capacity to assist families by gaining resources through grant writing, and assisting adults to become self-sufficient in this economy through employment services and innovative practices such as microenterprise.

2012 Prevention of Youth Substance Abuse in Rural Communities: Reaching Out to Missing Partners is a training conference that emphasizes the unique challenges of conducting youth prevention in rural communities. The conference was founded by one of the most successful prevention coalitions in the country, in hopes of raising awareness of the plight that many rural communities face with regards to the growth of youth substance abuse.

Conference on Public Participation in Scientific Research

With the rapid growth and innovation of public participation in scientific research (PPSR), practitioners are in need of a venue for sharing insights across projects and fields of study. This landmark event will convene science researchers, project leaders, educators, technology specialists, evaluators, and others from across many disciplines (including astronomy, molecular biology, human and environmental health, and ecology) to discuss advancing the field of PPSR. The PPSR Conference is being held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America (ESA), a venue that has long been supportive of citizen science and that always welcomes practitioners from diverse fields. We hope that all who are interested in the future of the field of PPSR will join us this August!

Indian Health Service National Behavioral Health Conference

Excellence in Diabetes 2013

6-9 February 2013 Istanbul, Turkey

Excellence in Diabetes 2013 is a conference taking place in Istanbul, Turkey, 6-9 February 2013. It is organised by EI Conferences & Communication UK Ltd in cooperation with the Oxford Health Alliance, Oxford, UK. Excellence in Diabetes 2013 has as its theme “Interdisciplinary approaches: from prevention to cure”. We will be exploring the impact of diabetes on the health and wellbeing of the individual, and the community at large. Our aim is to be inter-disciplinary and interactive in our approach by involving specialists from all aspects of care. There will be tracks dedicated to discussing the latest innovations in therapeutics, prevention and new insights into effective global diabetes management.

Colleagues from developing countries are particularly welcome. There is a Community Interventions for Health Summit embedded within the programme which explicitly addresses health promotion in lower and middle income countries.
