International Society for Disease Surveillance Annual Conference

The ISDS Annual Conference is the premier event dedicated to the advancement of the science and practice of biosurveillance. This year’s theme, Expanding Collaborations to Chart a New Course in Public Health Surveillance, will highlight the importance of working together across agencies, sectors, and disciplines to improve surveillance methods and population health outcomes. The conference will be held at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina in San Diego, CA, December 4-5, 2012, with Pre-Conference Workshops on December 3rd.

The ISDS Conference draws professionals from a broad range of disciplines— epidemiology and computer science to mathematical modeling and health policy—to learn and contribute the latest achievements, methodologies, best practices, conceptual frameworks, and technical innovations in the rapidly evolving field of biosurveillance. This year's conference will provide fertile ground for cultivating new ideas and partnerships with roundtable discussions, panels and other opportunities to collaborate.

The scope of this conference includes all of the components, policies, methods, practices, infrastructure, research and evaluation related to timely surveillance of communicable diseases, chronic diseases and injuries. This includes notifiable conditions, adverse events and emerging/novel threats; biological, chemical, and radiological health threats; plant, animal, and food surveillance; and environmental monitoring.

International Federation for Information Processing/International Medical Informatics Association International Working Conference on Interfacing Bio- and Medical Informatics

27 September 2012 Amsterdam, the Netherlands

From 24 to 26 September 2012 the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) is having its World Computer Congress WCC2012 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (www.wcc-2012.org). During the WCC2010 conference in Brisbane, Australia, IFIP and the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) organized a joint conference for the first time in their history. Also this time a joint one-day associated meeting will be held on Thursday 27 September. The topic of this meeting will be the link between bioinformatics and medical informatics. IFIP’s Working Groups 5.13 Bioinformatics and its applications and IMIA’s Working Group on Informatics in Genomic Medicine (IGM) are working in this area and supporting this event.

BODYNETS 2012, 7th International Conference on Body Area Networks

Oslo, Norway, September 24–26, 2012

The advancement in sensing, embedded computing, and wireless communication has accelerated the progress of adopting sensor networks to form Body Area Networks (BodyNets). BodyNets integrate and deploy wireless sensors, RFID tags, and other pervasive devices within and around human bodies for constructing diverse and practical systems for physiological monitoring, human computer interaction, and provision of entertainment. This conference will explore and explain the scope and challenges of designing, building, and deploying BodyNets. In this regard, the conference aims to establish a forum to exchange ideas, discuss practices, raise awareness, and share experiences among researchers and practitioners in the field of computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, medicine, and other disciplines in both academia and industry. This conference also allows authors to present new and emerging trends to address the technical, social, system and application issues related to BodyNets.

While the mission of the conference is to share novel basic research ideas as well as experimental applications in the BodyNets area in addition to identifying new directions for future research and development the new scientific topics such as nano communication networks, bio-inspired networks, molecular networks, etc. will be considered. BodyNets 2012 will give researchers a unique opportunity to share their perspectives with others interested in the various aspects from molecular to micro level communication to novel applications from medicine to automobile industry. The conference consists of four symposia that cover a broad range of research aspects. In addition, the program will include three outstanding keynote speakers from academia and industry. A panel session on “Nano communications networks: from theory to practical applications” and an industrial track will surely provoke thoughtful discussions. There will also be two tutorials given free of charge to all BodyNets 2012 attendees. We hope that the conference proceedings will serve as a valuable reference to researchers and developers in the area.

Workshop I: Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an important part of medical science in the world. Chinese Medicine is good at prevention and prediction of diseases. But the typical methods of TCM mostly rely on doctors’ empirical experience, and a sophisticated collection of theories in a seemingly different paradigm from today’s mainstream western medicine. This might greatly restrict its applications and promotions. The development of information technologies has promoted the development and applications of TCM. It is becoming a revolutionary research method and technology development for data collection and management, data mining and analysis. Information technologies are becoming an ever-increasingly important part in the healthcare industry. Many companies around the world have successfully developed proprietary systems, tools and devices for their targeted applications in eHealth. But from an industry point of view, technologies alone are not enough for a significant advancement in an emerging market. How to combine government, medical institutions、insurance and other healthcare service providers together is a challenging issue. In particular, how to provide eHealth services with new service models to special demographic people, such as aging, maternal and children, disabled and rural people, are especially challenging.
