Polymers: From Biomedical Applications to Energy

Monday November 12 2012 - Friday November 16 2012 Xcaret, Mexico

The continued application of synthetic chemistry to the development of new polymer-based materials has given polymer chemistry a critical role in the development of new materials across a broad range of applications that impact our lives, most recently in biomedical and energy-related areas. Synthetic methodologies that allow the shaping of polymeric materials to function as biomaterials in applications including tissue engineering, imaging, and the targeted delivery of drugs and biological materials will be presented. We will showcase creative designs and synthetic strategies for these multifunctional polymeric systems and composite materials. The multifaceted properties of polymers allow for the increasing advancement of polymers in energy-related applications. The optimization of polymer-based organic photovoltaic and hybrid materials for harvesting and storing solar energy, as well as the development of new semiconducting polymers will be topics of particular interest. The unique site and forum will give the attendees many opportunities to exchange ideas, discuss research challenges and forge new collaborations. The total number of attendees will be kept to a maximum of 100 to facilitate such interactions. The themes in 2012 will include: - Synthesis of Biomaterials - Applications of Nanomaterials in Medicine - Self assembly - Theranostics - Polymer Surfaces - Polymers for Imaging and Devices - Polymers and Energy

Peptide Chemistry Conference 2012

Peptide Chemistry Conference 2012

Friday November 2 2012 - Tuesday November 6 2012 Xcaret, Mexico

The interest of pharmaceutical companies for peptides is increasing enormously in the last decade. There are several reasons for that. In first place, the number of the so-called small molecules accepted for the corresponding agencies are declining. In this sense, pharmaceutical are looking more to biological based drugs. Furthermore, the advances in fields of formulation, drug delivery technology and chemical modifications, have rekindled the interest in peptides as APIs.

This would not be possible without the concurrence of strong peptide chemistry. The development of new resins for the solid-phase methodology, coupling reagents, orthogonal protecting groups, and synthetic strategies are being allowed the rapid and efficient synthesis of small and large peptides for research and, then, the multi-ton preparation of the API based peptides.

This Zing conference will be totally devoted into the latest developments in peptide chemistry. In addition to the parameters outlined above, the following topics will be discussed:

Synthesis of building blocks
use of microwave and other technologies
syntheses of foldamers, peptide conjugates, and peptides for nanotechnologies
preparation of peptide libraries
chemical ligation for protein synthesis
syntheses of complex cyclic peptide of natural origin and peptide mimetics
industrial synthesis of peptides

Attendees from the academia and the industry as well Ph.D. students and post-doctoral fellows will fulfill an unique atmosphere around the peptide world.

European Molecular Biology Laboratory Conference Series: Chemical Biology 2012

EMBL Heidelberg, Germany Wednesday 26 September - Saturday 29 September 2012

Why You Should Attend

Chemical Biology is a quickly growing highly interdisciplinary field, which investigates biological questions by using chemical strategies and tools. It has emerged to become an important and central discipline by itself complementing areas such as medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, cell biology, structural biology and biochemistry. Researchers in Chemical Biology find themselves at home in the chemistry and the biology lab and fuse the experimental possibilities that both have to offer.

Aims of event
The biennial series aims to give an overview on the current status of the fast evolving field and an outlook to where the field is heading. The conference will provide a unique opportunity for scientists using diverse research approaches and methods to come together and to network. It is structured to enhance exchange and discussions between researchers, for the benefit of their own research as well as for the progress of the field.

Topics
The conference will cover a broad area of approaches and methods used in Chemical Biology including:

Molecular imaging and switching tools

Computational and structural approaches

Innovative drug design approaches

Chemical genetics and high throughput methods

Novel synthetic methods as applied to biological questions

Chemical protein engineering

Chemical cell biology

History of Conference

The conference Chemical Biology 2010 was held at the new Advanced training Centre at EMBL Heidelberg. Due to the large success of the initial conference in 2008, Chemical Biology 2010 and the following conferences in the biennial series became a member of the family of EMBO-funded conferences. With about 30 invited speakers, 20 oral presentations chosen from the abstracts, 180 posters and over 300 participants, the 2010 event was a truly impressive success.

13th International Congress of the Society for Ethnopharmacology

in collaboration with the

Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research

and

Eurasia Pacific Uninet

September 2 - 6, 2012 Graz, Austria

The International Society for Ethnopharmacology is a collaborative, interdisciplinary group of scientists - anthropologists, pharmacists, pharmacologists, ethnobotanists, phytochemists, and others - all fascinated by the study of the local and global use of traditional medicines.

The 13th International Congress of the Society for Ethnopharmacology will be organized in collaboration with the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research and Eurasia-Pacific Uninet, and will be hosted by University of Graz, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, in Graz/Austria from September 2 - 6, 2012.

Traditional medicinal knowledge has been transferred over the centuries and also over wide distances, and develops into globalised herbal medicine. In this congress we want to focus in particular on the intercultural aspects of herbal medicine and its relevance in modern societies. As an example, we want to discuss the relevance of the Silk Road for the exchange of medicinal plants and medicinal knowledge between east and west.

The research topics presented in plenary and keynote lectures will in particular deal with a holistic approach and the application of systems biology in medicinal plant research. Special emphasis will be on traditional and modern herbal medicinal products in ageing related and infectious diseases. However, presentations from other areas of ethnopharmacology will also be accepted as short lectures and posters.

MAIN SCIENTIFIC TOPICS

Intercultural ethnopharmacology Ethnomedicine along the Silk Road Herbal medicines - from traditional knowledge to global commodities Holistic approach and systems biology in medicinal plant research Traditional and modern herbal medicinal products in aging related diseases Traditional and modern herbal medicinal products in infectious diseases
