International Conference in Modeling Health Advances (ICMHA'12)

San Francisco, USA, 24-26 October, 2012

The International Conference in Modeling Health Advances 2012 will take place in San Francisco, USA, 24-26 October, 2012.

A host of new diseases, like HIV/AIDS, BSE, Avian Flu, West Nile Virus and others have appeared on the scene during the last twenty five years and undoubtedly, more will come in the coming years. To tackle these illnesses, the cooperation of modelers, mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, and others, and of researchers from the medical community is absolutely essential. Modeling is important because it gives important insight into the method of treatment. In the case of HIV/AIDS, for example, mathematical modeling indicated that a combination of both protease inhibitors and reverse transcriptase inhibitors would be far more effective than any one of these two drugs.

The purpose of this conference is to bring all the people working in the area of epidemiology under one roof and encourage mutual interaction.

The conference ICMHA'12 is held under the World Congress on Engineering and Computer Science WCECS 2012. The WCECS 2012 is organized by the International Association of Engineers (IAENG), a non-profit international association for engineers and computer scientists. The congress has the focus on the frontier topics in the theoretical and applied engineering and computer science subjects. The last IAENG conference has attracted more than five hundred participants from over 30 countries. All submitted papers will be under peer review and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceeding (ISBN: 978-988-19251-6-9). The abstracts will be indexed and available at major academic databases. The accepted papers will also be considered for publication in the special issues of the journal Engineering Letters, in IAENG journals and in edited books by publishers like Springer.

Molecular Pharming - Recent Progress in Manufacturing Medicines in Plants

Friday, 21 September 2012 09:00 - 17:00 London, United Kingdom

Molecular Pharming is on the brink of taking off! After two decades of development and academic proofs of principle, a number of recent advances have moved the technology rapidly towards commercialisation. The first products are now being licensed in the USA. The first-in-human clinical trial of a plant derived monoclonal antibody has been performed in Europe. And there has been significant investment into manufacturing facilities around the world.

This meeting will review the progress of the field, highlight major technological advances and scan the horizon for future developments.

Biodiversity in the Balance: Causes and Consequences

European Molecular Biology Laboratory Heidelberg, Germany Friday 9 November - Saturday 10 November 2012

Why You Should Attend

Biodiversity refers to the variation of life at all levels of biological organization - genes, species, and ecosystems – in all their mind-boggling manifestations on the planet. Through the provision of ecosystem “goods and services” it is the most salient feature of life on earth. It supports all of our economic and social development, and is vital to our health and well-being. Species of animals and plants have always been important as sources of food, fuels, medicines, clothing and building materials, while ecosystems provide and maintain supplies of clean water, soil and air. However, this is frequently taken for granted in an increasingly developed and globalised world.

Why is the living world so diverse; that is, what forces and processes led to the evolution and proliferation of so many species? The dynamics that allow interacting species to coexist in an ecosystem simultaneously influence the productivity, nutrient dynamics and stability of that ecosystem and this process can go further; species have coevolved giving rise to a world of symbiotic ecosystems. What happens if those dynamics get thrown off balance? What evidence is there that suggests that biodiversity is becoming substantially reduced on a planetary scale? What methods and new tools do scientists currently employ to map and assess biodiversity both locally and globally? What are the stakes for human health, economic prosperity and long-term survival? How should access to biological resources be responsibly and equitably managed? And, finally, the evidence that human actions may be harming, perhaps irreversibly, the biodiversity upon which we all depend raises yet another question: what is the state of affairs in international efforts to counter further losses of biodiversity?

Aims of event
The main aim of these joint meetings is to present important areas of life science research in a manner accessible to all, and to promote reflection on their implications. At the same time, they should facilitate a broad dialogue between biologists, behavioral and social scientists, students of all disciplines, and members of the public.

Topics
The evolving web of life: continuities and discontinuities
Assessing, mapping and researching forms of life
Biodiversity: benefits and the risks of loss
Human impact and visions of sustainability

From Functional Genomics to Systems Biology

European Molecular Biology Laboratory Heidelberg, Germany Saturday 17 November - Tuesday 20 November 2012

Why You Should Attend

The EMBO ‘From Functional Genomics to Systems Biology’ conference has served as an important venue in helping to shape the field and generate a community of scientists that come from very diverse disciplines. The common goal is to understand the systems level properties of complex systems at all scales from molecular processes to cells, tissues and organisms. The meeting was initiated in 2002 and has been held every two-years at EMBL Heidelberg, with the 2012 meeting being the sixth biennial conference. Due to the excellent line up of speakers, the interactive atmosphere and lively discussions after the talks, the feedback from both the participants and speakers at past meetings has always been excellent, with many 2010 speakers calling the meeting ‘the highlight of the year’. For 2012, there is a full program of confirmed speakers available online. Given their caliber, at the cutting edge of genomics, the 2012 meeting will be a major event and a must attend for people interested in Genomics and Systems biology.

Aims of event
The main objective of this conference is to bring people together from these diverse disciplines to exchange ideas, promote cross-disciplinary collaborations and to form a synthesis of appropriate systems-level approaches.

Topics
The meeting is purposely very broad and covers all aspects of functional genomic approaches to systems biology, going from the genome to phenotype. These include general principles of transcription, transcriptional networks, protein interactions, functional interaction networks (synthetic lethal screens, genetics, RNAi), synthetic biology, multi-dimensional data integration and qualitative and quantitative modeling.
