1st Annual 2013 Conference on International Translational Nanomedicine

The conference will be held on the campus of Northeastern University in Boston, MA, USA. The conference will include plenary speakers, oral and poster presentations, and numerous activities specifically for undergraduate and graduate students. As the focus of the conference is to highlight translational nanomedicine research, we will also focus on highlighting start-up companies and well-established companies in the nanomedicine sectors.

5th International Conference on Mechanics of Biomaterials and Tissues

December 8-12, 2013 Sitges, Spain

Join us at the 5th International Conference on Mechanics of Biomaterials and Tissues, reviewing the very latest on the mechanics of biological, natural and biologically inspired materials, and those materials used to replace them in the human body.

The conference provides an excellent forum for the discussion of the experimental, computational and theoretical studies of deformation and fracture behavior in biological, natural and replacement materials, and the role mechanical properties play in physiological and disease conditions. A core theme will be how lessons learnt in the study of engineering materials can be made relevant to the study of biomaterials, and how this can help us to develop models for biological processes, new methods for diagnosing and treating diseases, and the design of novel materials.

This conference focuses on all scales, integrating microscopic to macroscopic levels and includes work at the nanoscale such as the mechanics of molecules such as protein and DNA, used to find solutions to critical questions at the interface of engineering and medicine.

The past two decades have seen an explosion in Neural Engineering research dedicated to interfacing the nervous system to the external world. Research in this area has been motivated by the promise of treatments for elusive medical conditions ranging from blindness to chronic pain to spinal cord injury, and has been supported by a sustained campaign from a spectrum of federal funding agencies. Overall progress in the field has been limited by the lack of large, comprehensive data resources. The purpose of this symposium is to focus the attention of the research community on a progression of neural engineering research questions and to generate and curate massive data sets to be used in addressing those questions. The existence of massive common data corpora has proven to substantially accelerate research progress. In this symposium, we will explore the community needs for such massive data and discuss models for the funding, development and distribution of these resources.

Bioinformatics, Systems Biology and Intelligent Computing are synergistic disciplines that hold great promise for the advancement of biomedical research and development through the design of intelligent systems to solve engineering practical problems as well as translational science problems. Research and development in these areas impact science and technology, and synergies among these disciplines provide enormous potential. The International Conference on Intelligent Biology and Medicine (ICIBM) aims to provide a forum for the cross-fertilization of ideas and promotion of interdisciplinary collaborations. 4th International Symposium on Surface and Interface of Biomaterials ISSIB-2013

September 24-28, 2013 Rome, Italy

Surfaces and interfaces in biomaterials are key issues in the biomaterials and tissue engineering field and form a key scientific base for the rapid development in this field. They are at the forefront of biomaterials R & D, and play a major role for technology transfer toward industries. In this context, the 4th ISSIB-2013 aims to provide an international forum for scientists, engineers, clinicians and medical device manufacturers to present and discuss the latest scientific findings and technological developments in a very challenging context connected with surfaces and interfaces of biomaterials. The synthesis, characterization, testing, modeling, assessment, application, and other pertinent aspects of the surface and interface of biomaterials will be covered by the conference. The 4th ISSIB-2013 will promote multidisciplinary and transversal research, with international and inter-institutional collaborations. Through sharing new ideas and discussing concepts at the cutting edge of the field important issues regarding biomaterials surface and interface can and will be tackled, thus advancing the science and engineering of biomaterials.

The 6th International IEEE EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering, which will be held at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina – CA from 5-8 November 2013, just before The Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting. The conference will highlight the emerging engineering innovations in the restoration and enhancement of impaired sensory, motor, and cognitive functions, novel engineering for deepening knowledge of brain function, and advanced design and use of neurotechnologies.

Main Conference

The main conference will take the form of a three-day single-track oral and poster presentation programme, 30th July to 1st August 2013, that will include six plenary lectures from leading international researchers in biomimetic and biohybrid systems.

Biomimetics can, in principle, extend to all fields of biological research from physiology and molecular biology to ecology, and from zoology to botany. Promising research areas include system design and structure, self-organization and co-operativity, new biologically active materials, self-assembly and self-repair, learning, memory, control architectures and self-regulation, movement and locomotion, sensory systems, perception, and communication. Biomimetic research, particularly at the nano-scale, should also lead to important advances in component miniaturisation, self-configuration, and energy-efficiency.  A key focus of the conference will be on complete behaving systems in the form of biomimetic robots that can operate on different substrates on sea, on land, or in the air. A further central theme will be the physiological basis for intelligent behaviour as explored through neuromimetics—the modelling of neural systems. Exciting emerging topics within this field include the embodiment of neuromimetic controllers in hardware, termed neuromorphics, and within the control architectures of robots, sometimes termed neurorobotics.

Biohybrid systems usually involve structures from the nano-scale (molecular) through to the macro-scale (entire organs or body parts). Important implementation examples are: Bio-machine hybrids where, for instance, biological muscle is used to actuate a synthetic device. Brain-machine interfaces where neurons and their molecular machineries are connected to microscopic sensors and actuators by means of electrical or chemical communication, either in vitro or in the living organism. Intelligent prostheses such as artificial limbs, wearable exoskeletons, or sensory organ-chip hybrids (such cochlear implants, and artificial retina devices) designed to assist the disabled or elderly, or to aid in rehabilitation from illness. Implantable or portable devices that have been fabricated for monitoring health care or for therapeutic purposes such as artificial implants to control insulin release. Biohybrid systems at the organism level such as robot-animal or robot-human communities.  Biohybrid systems may take advantage of progress in the field of synthetic biology.
