Second International Workshop on Design & Implementation of Independent & Assisted Living Technology – DIILT ’12

At 26th Annual HCI Conference of the British Computer Society HCI 2012 - People and Computers XXVI

Birmingham, U.K, 10th-14th September 2012

The aim of this workshop is to bring together experts, academics and practitioners to share experiences and expertise of assisted living technology, telecare or telehealth implementations and evaluations.

Discussions will focus on the challenges and best practices in evaluating the impact of practical and pragmatic implementations and large scale roll-out of health technologies 'in the wild' (i.e outside of the lab and beyond pilot studies).

The workshop will review case studies, trials, design, development and implementations of technologies reaching end-users in their homes to support, tele-care, telehealth, independent or assisted living. The aim is to assess how technologies can be integrated into people's homes and communities and how resulting benefits or disbenefits on people's health and wellbeing can be objectively measured and evaluated.

Joint Meeting of the Society for Glycobiology and the American Society for Matrix Biology

November 11-14, 2012 San Diego, California

2012 will mark the first joint venture for the Society for Glycobiology and the American Society for Matrix Biology. After a successful guest symposium in 2010, the two groups decided to join forces and create an innovative program for this 2012 meeting set for November 11th – 14th in San Diego, CA.The joint ASMB/SFG 2012 Meeting represents a unique opportunity for scientists and medical professionals involved in research, clinical and applied disciplines related to matrix biology and glycobiology to meet, discuss, learn and network. With both society's non-profit focus on investigation and education and an innovative and original program planned, attendance is expected to exceed 400 participants including both ASMB and SFG members and non-members. Participation by the International Society for Matrix Biology (ISMB) and a number of other guest societies is sure to enhance the value of our attendees' experience.

Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications Conference on Mathematics of Medical Devices and Surgical Procedures

Monday 17 - Wednesday 19 September 2012 University College London United Kingdom

Mathematics is playing an ever increasing role in the area of health and medicine, through the use of modelling, statistics, and virtual simulations. These mathematical tools are becoming invaluable in testing the feasibility of surgical procedures and medical devices prior to clinical trials. Furthermore, there is a very realistic possibility over the next twenty years that computer models coupled to patient-specific imaging will be used in real time in the clinical environment to directly advise on treatment strategies. The aim of this conference is to bring together the diverse community of mathematicians, engineers, physicists, clinicians involved in using applied sciences and mathematics to develop and use medical devices to discuss both the latest research and the needs of the clinical community and patients.

The topics that will be discussed will broadly include cardiovascular devices, medical imaging, ophthalmology, cell biology, disease transmission, orthopaedic, advanced simulations, as well as health in ageing. The conference programme will include keynote speakers drawn from both clinical and mathematical communities, along with contributed presentations and poster sessions. The programme will also include breakout sessions in certain topics as well as refreshment breaks for informal discussions. Social events include a drinks reception and a conference dinner.

13th Biennial International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs

July 11-13, 2012; Pre-Conference July 09-10, 2012

University of Linz, Altenbergerstraße 69, 4040 Linz, Austria

2012 marks the 13th biennial International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs (ICCHP). From the inception of the conference, ICCHP has been a vibrant forum for the discussion of serious physical and societal issues related to the quality of life of people with special needs. From educational issues, to mobility problems, to disability rights to issues associated with the aging of our society, and beyond, ICCHP has supplied a venue for open discussion on complex issues, and the exchange of cutting edge scientific breakthroughs to make the life of people with special needs more fulfilling.

Starting as a conference concerning people with disabilities, the ICCHP meeting has become a voice for discussion and potential adoption of new science and public policy analysis to a world of increasingly longer lifespans and the difficulties inherent in that phenomenon. Given longer life expectancy and the decline of national birth rates, the community of the disabled is growing at a faster rate than expected. As a result of changes in the demographics in our world, the ICCHP meeting has maintained its position as an important voice in the quality of life for people with disabilities from birth to old age.

The meeting annually hosts high-quality, well reviewed submissions from scientists and policy makers from around the world. In addition to the traditional paper sessions, the meeting also includes industry representatives showing their new products and looking for new ideas. Additionally, the conference affords spaces and times for less formal discussions – an important factor supporting the transfer of knowledge so needed in our endeavors.
