Call for Papers on Real-time Visualization of Lung Function: Rrom Micro to Macro for the American Journal of Physiology - Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology

Recently, there has been an explosion of interest in imaging physiological processes in the lung in real time, and several notable advances have been made, which have been facilitated by new methodological approaches, novel microscopic and radiological imaging technologies, as well as the development of genetically modified animal models that facilitate imaging approaches. The pressing need for further advances in the development or refinement of experimental approaches for the real-time assessment of lung structure and function, together with an explosion of interest in this area of pre-clinical and clinical pulmonary research, has prompted this Special Call for Papers on "Real-time Visualization of Lung Function: from Micro to Macro" from the American Journal of Physiology - Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology.

Articles must be submitted by January 1, 2014.

Call for Papers on Biomarkers of Household Air Pollution for the American Journal of Physiology - Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology
04/01/2014
American Journal of Physiology - Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology

Call for Papers on Biomarkers of Household Air Pollution for the American Journal of Physiology - Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology

Household air pollution (HAP) generated from the burning of solid fuels such as biomass or coal for cooking and heating is a leading environmental cause of death in the world and contributes greatly to the global burden of pulmonary disease. Research and policy are hampered by a lack of mechanistic understanding and of useful biomarkers. The American Journal of Physiology - Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology is thus issuing a call for papers to increase our understanding of how HAP causes or contributes to lung and systemic injury, including risks associated with HAP exposure during pregnancy.

Responsive papers that address HAP or solid fuel smoke exposure could investigate:

Biomarkers that reflect the biological response to HAP exposure providing surrogate markers in lieu of direct exposure monitoring

Biomarkers of biological sequelae of both short- or long-term exposure to HAP. These might illuminate underlying mechanisms or dose-response effects from acute vs. chronic exposures.

Biomarkers that inform risk of respiratory and other related health outcomes associated with HAP.

This is an exciting opportunity for translation of cell and molecular physiology into solutions for a global problem. We welcome papers across the spectrum of research in this area: biomarker concepts in development, biomarkers using animal models, or biomarkers in human subjects that might be used in field studies in low resource settings. Please submit papers to Dr. Sadis Matalon, Editor-in-Chief, American Journal of Physiology - Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology (http://ajplung.msubmit.net/).

Deadline April 1st, 2014.

Call for Papers: Sex and Gender Differences in Cardiovascular Physiology - Back to Basics

Guest Editor Dr. Virginia Miller and the Editors of AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology extend an invitation to submit original research articles related to sex and gender differences in cardiovascular physiology. Although sex and gender differences in cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality are recognized in clinical medicine, physiological mechanisms behind these differences have been ignored in basic research. We welcome work from genetic and molecular science to integrative animal and human physiology exploring sex differences in mitochondrial function, energetics, cellular ion regulation, secretory and mechanical processes of endothelial, smooth muscle, myocardium and autonomic and neuronal regulation. Many sex distinctions occur at specific times in the life cycle such as puberty or pregnancy, thus we encourage submissions which address interaction with development and aging. All manuscripts accepted from this Call for Papers will be included in a unique online article collection to further highlight this important topic. The article collection will also include specially commissioned Review articles.

All manuscripts should be submitted online here: http://ajpheart.msubmit.net/cgi-bin/main.plex

During the online submission process, under the "Keywords & Special Sections" tab, please use the "Category" drop-down menu and select “Sex and Gender Differences in Cardiovascular Physiology- Back to Basics."

Manuscripts will undergo normal peer review as they are received. Accepted manuscripts will be published online as they are accepted. Articles published from this Call for Papers will be highlighted with a special “Call for Papers” banner on the article PDF, as well as included in the Sex and Gender Differences in Cardiovascular Physiology- Back to Basics online article collection at time of publication.

Manuscripts can be submitted anytime but must be submitted by September 30, 2013 to be eligible for inclusion in this Call for Papers. If you have any questions please contact Kara Hansell Keehan, Executive Editor, via email at khkeehan@verizon.net.
