Call for Papers on the Topic of Nursing Informatics in the 21st Century for the Canadian Journal of Nursing Research

CALL FOR PAPERS: Nursing Informatics in the 21st Century
March 2013 (Volume 45 No 1)

Health information systems (e.g., nursing information systems, electronic health record systems, personal health record systems, telehealth/telenursing systems) are being implemented globally to improve the quality, efficiency, and safety of patient care. Increasingly, nurses are involved in the design, development, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of health information systems to support patient care, nursing, and the work of health professionals.

For this issue of CJNR we invite papers that focus on issues in nursing informatics and health/biomedical informatics as they relate to nursing. We welcome reports on completed qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research, literature reviews, systematic reviews, and syntheses. Papers on theoretical, methodological, and current trends in nursing informatics are also welcome. Examples of topics include the following: competencies in nursing terminologies; competencies in nursing informatics; implementation of electronic health record systems and its effect on nursing work; patient-nurse use of personal health record systems; disease management systems; systems usability as it relates to nursing personnel and nursing care; impacts of systems on nursing workflow; decision-support systems for nurses; importance of health and information literacy; and mobile health and nursing. We welcome submissions from nurses (e.g., nursing informatics specialists, nurse administrators), health informatics specialists, and nursing/health and biomedical informatics researchers whose focus is nursing informatics. Manuscripts describing international approaches to nursing informatics issues are welcome.

Call for Papers for a Special Issue of the Journal of Clinical Nursing: Sexual and Reproductive Health

The issue of sexual and reproductive health is a major area of clinical practice. It encompasses a broad range of topics – sexuality, sexual behavior, altered body image, sexual and reproductive pathologies and infections, HIV/AIDS, abortion, sexual abuse as well as sexual health services, sex education and the impact of illness, social deprivation and age upon sexuality and sexual expression. Nurses are increasingly involved in work with patients, clients and communities that have sexual and reproductive needs – developing a holistic approach to care is essential, as well as increasing the evidence base for sexual and reproductive health interventions. This special issue aims to make a substantial contribution to this evidence base and also celebrate the wide ranging nature of sexual and reproductive health nursing practice.

Scope Researchers, practitioners and educators are invited to submit a manuscript based on a research study, literature review or discursive topic related to any area of Sexual and Reproductive health that has implications for nursing practice.

Manuscripts are especially welcome in the following areas (although other papers will be considered):

Child and adolescent sexual health issues, HIV/AIDS, Ageing and sexual health, Sexuality and chronic illnesses, Mental health and sexuality, Sex education, Sexual health in marginalized populations, Sexuality and clinical practice, Establishing/evaluating sexual health care or services, sexually transmitted infections, sexual health and pregnancy

All manuscripts will be expected to discuss the implications for clinical practice and adhere to the Journal of Clinical Nursing guidelines for authors available at www.wileyonlinelibrary.com/journal/jocn

Call for Papers for a Special Issue of the Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association: Recovery-Oriented Practice in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing

In a 2005 Mental Health Declaration for Europe, the World Health Organization identified the need to “design and implement…mental health systems that promote…recovery.” According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Consensus Statement, Recovery is cited as the “single most important goal” for the mental health service delivery system (2006). Most recently, on December 22, 2011 the SAMHSA announced a new working definition of recovery as “A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential”. Four major dimensions that support a life in recovery include health, home, purpose, and community along with 10 guiding principles: hope; person-driven; holistic; peer support; relationship and social networks; culturally-based and influenced; importance of addressing trauma; involving friends, family, community strengths, and responsibility; respect; and, the need for many pathways for recovery to occur.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) is one of five national participants in a SAMHSA initiative to transform the concepts of recovery from a set of beliefs to recovery-oriented nursing practices. As a profession, psychiatric-mental health nursing focuses on the person with the disease or disorder (not the disease or disorder itself). We assist people, through recovery-oriented interventions to adapt to their world and find personal meaning and purpose in their own real-life experiences as community members. This special issue will focus on the state of the science: How Psychiatric Nursing is understanding, integrating and developing recovery-practices and programs; and, how these practices affect outcomes.

Manuscript submission may include, but are not limited to:

Innovative recovery-oriented program development
Development, implementation, and evaluation of recovery-oriented practices or components of recovery practice
First-person accounts of recovery practice and related outcomes

Data-based manuscripts, quality improvement studies, state of the science / systematic literature reviews preferred. All manuscripts should be translational in nature by including key practice points for psychiatric nurses that can be implemented in the institutional or community healthcare setting.

Call for Manuscripts on Health Education and Promotion for the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health

The Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health is soliciting manuscripts for the 2013 continuing education theme issues on Health Education and Promotion. We invite submissions that address optimizing women’s health and reproductive health outcomes. Potential topics include:

Call for Papers for a Thematic Issue of Family & Community Health: Faith-Based Initiatives to Promote Health

Social scientists and theologians have noted that churches and other faith-based organizations can have a considerable impact on society and its members. Over the past decade, government-sponsored faith-based initiatives have raised the profile of faith-based organizations as those that can provide services to disadvantaged individuals and communities. During this time, an increasing number of health scientists and public health practitioners have begun to work with faith-based institutions in health promotion and disease prevention efforts designed to improve the health of “hard to reach” or “at-risk” populations. The emergence of these efforts has sparked interests in examining the relationship between faith and health. “Faith” like “health” is a concept with multiple descriptions and applications, making it difficult to specify elements of successful collaboration between scientific and spiritual institutions.

This thematic issue will build on the foundation laid in Volume 32, Issue 4 which highlighted the diversity of faith-based programs and their potential impact for individuals and their communities. We invite investigators to contribute original research as well as review articles that will further broaden the understanding of the relationship between faith and health. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Papers that discuss or refine existing theoretical models undergirding current faith-based research
• Papers that highlight seemingly subtle distinctions (i.e., faith-based orientation vs. church-based orientation) that can lead to considerable differences in approaches and outcomes
• Descriptions of epidemiological studies examining associations between faith and health
• Descriptions of intervention studies in faith settings and/or that incorporate faith-based elements

We especially welcome manuscripts that have leaders of faith-based organizations (e. g., pastors) as contributing authors.

Call for Papers for a Special Thematic Issue of the Journal of Social Work in End-of-Life and Palliative Care: Chronic Illness at the End of Life

Deadline: July 15, 2012

The Journal of Social Work in End-of-Life and Palliative Care invites manuscripts for a special thematic issue on chronic illness at the end of life.

Appropriate topics may be related to a range of medical diagnoses: Cancer, ESRD, Alzheimer’s, COPD, HIV, etc. and challenges encountered and opportunities presented at the end stages of the disease process. Issues could pertain to the needs of individuals diagnosed with the illness, caregivers (family and professional), health care systems, and policy. Also manuscripts could address: challenges faced by people facing multiple illnesses; challenges, innovations, and interventions in care of persons with chronic illness at EOL; pain management/palliative care issues; and the role of the social worker and the interdisciplinary teams consideration in care of persons with chronic illness at EOL. Manuscripts could focus on a single illness or compare issues/interventions across illnesses. Also, a range of practice settings, hospice, hospital, nursing homes, assisted living could serve as a focus for manuscripts. As always, international perspectives and cross-cultural research are welcome.
