Call for Manuscripts: Second Annual Special Issue of Nursing Economic$ on Staffing Based on Evidence

Target Issue: September/October 2012

Forging the Future of Staffing Based on Evidence 2012

What Do We Know?

The challenges we face in healthcare staffing continue to present opportunities for nurses to lead change and innovation. At the center of this movement must be evidence--research and data from experiences that become the framework upon which we determine the strategies, policies and practices that will serve the profession now and in the future.

This is an invitation to nurse researchers and industry and operational thought leaders alike to contribute to the art and science of staffing based on evidence. It is the intention of this special issue that it serves as a valuable resource to individuals and organizations who are committed to staffing excellence as well as those who have not yet embraced evidence-based staffing in healthcare. By sharing knowledge, experiences, and wisdom, we will demonstrate the patient, workforce, and financial outcomes that can be achieved through evidence-based staffing practices.

Manuscripts are due by June 1st, 2012

Call for Papers for a Special Issue of the International Journal of Risk Assessment and Management: Learning from Experience and Event Analysis Methods for Improved Safety

Guest Editor:
Dr. Wim J.J. Van Wassenhove, MINES Paristech, France

This special issue will highlight recent progress, ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted methods of learning from experience and accident analysis.

Learning from experience is far more than just an event and accident analysis method. It concerns data collection methods, different analysis methods, the implementation of databases to store information, and reuse of the information gathered and the lessons learned (for instance in training sessions). In an organisation, the learning from experience process is also affected by a wide range of sociocultural factors; it therefore interacts closely with the safety culture of the organisation.

One the other hand, accident analysis methods are based on an accident meta-model and this approach frames the results of the analysis. They also differ in the emphasis they place on technological, human or organisational aspects.

This issue is intended for academics, practitioners, scientists and engineers involved in the areas of business, economics, scientific and technological disciplines, energy industries, environmental and ecological systems, safety, public health and medical services.

Subject Coverage

Suitable topics include but are not limited to:

Learning from experience methods
Learning from safety events
Organisational learning processes
Safety training
Accident analysis methods
Events investigation
Accident models and meta models
Case studies and event databases

Call for Papers for a Special Issue of Facilities: The Architecture of the Psychiatric Milieu

Guest Edited by Jan Golembiewski Faculty of Architecture, University of Sydney, Australia

The editorial team of Facilities are pleased to announce a call for papers for a special issue dedicated to an exploration of evidence-based approaches to establish the most appropriate architecture for the psychiatric milieu.

Facilities for psychiatric care have a tradition of standardization in design and treatment dating back to the moral treatment paradigm of the 1850’s. As normative approaches to psychiatric care have change, so too do the facilities used to house, treat and manage patients. The shift to evidence based design (EBD) in hospital architecture means that the psychiatric milieu must follow suit.

The search for evidence to model psychiatric facilities is an important endeavour. But psychiatric illness isn’t like orthopaedics or cardiology, where the needs and satisfaction of staff and patients can be relatively easy to assess and evidence can be easily measured. Mental illnesses are a heterogeneous group of disorders, and there is a risk in categorising all psychiatric illnesses together and treating them alike. Environmental influences that exacerbate one condition frequently assist with another. As such, Facilities is soliciting approaches that are specific to:

geriatric psychiatry
mood disorders
the non-affective psychotic spectrum
psychiatric emergencies
substance-related disorders
facilities for forensic psychiatry

This list is not exhaustive and interested authors are encouraged to contact the Guest Editor with alternative proposals. Please kindly take note of the following requirements if you wish to have your paper considered for this Special Issue:

The content of the paper must conform to the terms of reference of Facilities
All papers submitted will be subject to the normal double blind refereeing process undertaken by the journal
Submitted papers must not be under review by any other journal
The closing date for submissions is: 1st June 2012

Submissions to Facilities are made using ScholarOne Manuscripts, Emerald's online submission and peer review system. Registration and access is available at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/f.
