Call for Abstracts: American Society of Human Genetics 62nd Annual Meeting

The receipt deadline for new abstract submission is June 4, 2012 at 8:00 pm (US EDT).

The world's top scientists and clinicians in the human genetics field will gather to present their latest research findings at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), which will be held on November 6-10, 2012, in San Francisco, CA (http://www.ashg.org/2012meeting). ASHG is the primary professional membership organization for human genetics specialists worldwide, representing nearly 8,000 researchers, academicians, clinicians, genetic counselors, nurses, and others with a special interest in this area (http://www.ashg.org).

The ASHG Annual Meeting continues to be the largest human genetics meeting in the world, attracting more than 7,000 scientific participants each year. The ASHG 2012 Meeting will provide attendees with the latest information about cutting-edge developments in human genetics and genomics research. In addition, nearly 250 U.S. and international exhibitors at this year's ASHG Exhibitor Trade Show will offer an unprecedented opportunity to view the latest advances in genetics-related products and services derived, in part, from work presented at previous ASHG meetings.

Call for Abstracts: 4th Annual National Coalition of Oncology Nurse Navigators Conference: Changing the Face of Cancer Care

NCONN presents the 4th Annual Changing the Face of Cancer Care Conference October 4-6, 2012 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel Nashville, Tennessee.

The National Coalition of Oncology Nurse Navigators Changing the Face of Cancer Care Conference is designed for oncology nurses, oncology nurse navigators, clinical nurse specialists, social workers, community health care workers, patient navigators, and other experienced health care professionals dedicated to the field of oncology. The two-day conference aims to address the real time needs of the oncology nurse navigator and/or health care professional developing or expanding a disease specific or multi-disciplinary navigation program. Attendees will be provided a wide variety of topics affecting oncology nurse navigators and their programs today. The 2012 program will delve into the genetic and genomic science and the navigation needs of melanoma, gynecological, GI, thoracic, breast, hematologic oncologic cancers. Management of disease, treatment options, side effects, program management and quality of life across the cancer care continuum will also be addressed. There is an increasing focus on providing multidisciplinary care for patients with complex diseases by integrated teams of professionals representing the relevant treatment modalities. At the 4th Annual NCONN Changing the Face of Cancer Care Conference, experts in oncology nurse navigation will provide insight into the optimal multidisciplinary management of patients with all types of cancer and its application to practice.

The National Coalition of Oncology Nurse Navigators is accepting abstracts for poster presentations at the 4th Annual NCONN Conference: Changing the Face of Cancer Care. The deadline for submission is August 1, 2012.

Call for Papers: Relational Selves and Families in Medicine: Gender Perspectives

In many cases, there is only one patient in the patient-health care professional encounter. This, however, is not always the case. As some examples, two individuals may seek medical assistance in order to conceive a child together and more individuals may be involved if a sibling donates egg or sperm to a family-member and her/his partner.

Many other examples can be given of encounters and treatments that involve more than one patient and one health care professional. When the patient is a minor child, parent(s) may face difficult treatment decisions as regards medical treatment for their children. If two parents are involved in the decision, they may not always agree on what is the best treatment for their child. And what say does the child have in terms of treatments? As yet another example, cases of sibling organ donation where a sibling donates an organ to a brother or sister highlight how intimately family members can become involved in each other’s medical treatment. Finally, the topic of families in medicine can be pertinent in relation to aging and health care needs in later life, where relatives can become thoroughly involved in this care and where gender roles can feed into this care work.

Still, comparably little attention has been given to the role of families in medical encounters, treatment decisions, care work and illness experiences.

The aim of the conference

Relational selves and families in medicine: Gender Perspectives is to bring together scholars who examine the role of extended families, parents, siblings, children, and close friends in medicine, and this with a gender perspective. We welcome contributions from scholars with interdisciplinary and various disciplinary backgrounds within the social sciences and the humanities. We specially invite contributions that focus on (but are not limited to):

Assisted reproductive technologies, surrogacy, egg-, sperm- and embryo donation, adoption and other ways of becoming parents

The welfare of the child in medicine

Conceptions and norms of parenthood in medicine

Corrective measures: what is ‘corrected’ and why, in children’s and teen-agers’ bodies?

Ageing and care in later life

- Relational conceptions of selves and relational autonomy

- The interplay between self and others, and how this can inform the illness experience as well as experiences of hope, strength and health.

Please submit abstracts (400 words) incl. name and affiliation, no later than September 1, 2012, to abstracts.genderandhealth@gmail.com. The Conference Committee will select abstracts for oral presentation and notify whether or not you have been accepted.

Deadline for registration is October 15, 2012. Conference fee (100 Euro) covers one conference abstract booklet, coffee in pauses and one conference dinner.
