Call for Papers for a Session on Health, Disease, and Physical Culture at the Northeast Popular Culture Association Annual Conference

The Northeast Popular/American Culture Association (NEPCA) is soliciting papers for topics in the area of Health, Disease and Culture for its annual meeting, which will be held October 26-26 on the campus of St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York.

Topics in Health, Disease and Culture may include such themes as below: Mass media images of health and disease in popular culture--print, film, television, etc.

Portrayals of health institutions (e.g., hospitals, clinics, medical homes, pharmacies) and health professionals in history, literature or mass media

Portrayals of Prescription Drugs (E.G., Development, Marketing, Advertising, Consumption, Role in Treatment of Chronic Illnesses

Representations of the body in discourses of health and illness

Narratives of illness from patient and health practitioner perspectives in novels, short stories, memoirs, graphic comics, etc., discussed in larger sociocultural (ethnicity, race, gender, class), and political (health care system) contexts

Disability discourses in history, literature, and public policy

Outbreak narratives of infectious diseases (e.g., endemic, epidemic, pandemic) in popular media and literature; infectious diseases in history and public policy

Historical and contemporary perspectives on the promotion of health through diet, exercise, personal or domestic hygiene, cosmetic procedures, public health campaigns (e.g., smoking, obesity).

Focuses on Public Health: The Built Environment, Global Health, Emergency Preparedness, Occupational Health, Surveillance and Public Health

Creative Writing and Health Care Presentations from patient, caregiver, health professional or medical humanities practitioners, etc.

We invite both individual papers and proposals for complete panels (please include titles and abstracts for each panelist). Please send a 1-2 page paper proposal and a one-page vita to both the Program Chair Tim Madigan tmadigan@sjfc.edu and to the Area Chair for Health, Disease and Culture, Jennifer Tebbe-Grossman jennifer.tebbe-grossman@mcphs.edu. The deadline for submission is June 1, 2012.

Call for Papers: 29th International Seating Symposium

The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Rehabilitation Science & Technology Continuing Education Program (RSTCE) now invites proposals to present at the 29th International Seating Symposium - Building the Future to be held from 8:30 AM Thursday, March 7 to 1:00 PM Saturday, March 9, 2013. Pre-Symposium Workshops will take place on Tuesday, March 5, and Wednesday, March 6, 2013. This ISS will return to Nashville, TN, and the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. The 2011 ISS in Nashville was a big success with record attendance.

Also, based on feedback the Exhibit Hall will open a day earlier on Wednesday, March 6, giving attendees more opportunity to visit the Exhibits. Food and beverage will be available for purchase.

The ISS will once again offer full-day preconference sessions that include the Fundamentals of Wheelchair Seating and Mobility on Tuesday, March 5; and additional preconference workshops on Wednesday, March 6th.

Proposals are now being accepted for Paper and Poster presentations in addition to 1 hour and 2 hour Instructional Courses. For 2013 hands-on programs and advanced sessions are sought to take advantage of the resources in the exhibit hall that will be equipped with a large stage for presentations.

Proposal Topics

The symposium will include scientific and clinical papers, a research forum, in-depth workshops, panel sessions, and an extensive exhibit hall. Presentations should address the seating and wheeled mobility issues of people with disabilities across the lifespan such as neuromuscular disorders, spinal cord injury and diseases of the spinal cord, orthopedic conditions, systemic conditions, obesity, or polytrauma. Proposals that address service delivery issues including evidence-based practice, models of practice, policy and funding, documentation, and outcomes are also very much encouraged.

Presentations must be educational in format and intent. They must not have the appearance of product promotion, commercial bias, or advertisement.

With its strong global presence, APSC 2013 will provide unique networking opportunitites for local and regional professionals working in the fields of cardiovascular diseases and related topics. APSC 2013 will feature an exciting scientific program comprised of both international and local perspectives on the most pertinent issues of the day. The congress will be held in Pattaya, Thailand, once a quiet fishing town that has developed into a major seaside destination.
