Call for Abstracts: Accelerating Translational Neurotechnology: Fourth Annual Aspen Brain Forum

September 18 - 20, 2013 Aspen Meadows Resort

Presented by The Aspen Brain Forum Foundation, Science Translational Medicine, and the New York Academy of Sciences

Neurotechnology encompasses electrical, chemical, and medical devices and products that can interact with or intervene in the activity of the central nervous system. These technologies include neuroprosthetics, neuroengineering, neuroimaging, optogenetics, neuromodulation, and neural stem cell therapies. Translating neurotechnologies from the laboratory into clinical and commercial products has been an arduous process. Yet many of these new tools show great potential to revolutionize the treatment of neurological diseases and disorders including depression, pain, headache, epilepsy, neuromuscular disease, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain injury.

Through a series of plenary sessions, panel discussions, and interactive breakout groups, this 2.5-day international conference shall explore innovative scientific, clinical, and organizational models for advancing the translation of neuroscience research into technology that can dramatically improve diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disease. Participants will also examine the ethical and regulatory challenges in translating neuroscience research, and the potential economic impact of their clinical application.

This conference includes a breakout session. During registration, you will be asked to choose a work group based on your area/disease of interest. Please pick your first and second choices for this session. You may also write in an alternate topic. We will create additional groups if there is sufficient interest. Registrants will receive an email with work group details several weeks prior to the conference.

Choices include: Parkinson's Disease, Major Depression and other Mood Disorders, Chronic Pain, Alzheimer's Disease, or Traumatic Brain Injury.

Call for Investigational and Emerging Technologies Edited Live Case Presentations: TCT 25

October 27-November 1, 2013 San Francisco, California

Submission Deadline: July 26, 2013

A presentation opportunity at TCT 2013, you can submit your own edited taped case demonstrating a novel therapeutic or imaging technology in coronary, peripheral, or structural heart disease intervention that provides a unique solution for an unmet clinical need. The technology can be either investigational or in clinical use outside of the United States but not yet commercially available in the United States.

Case submitters will have the opportunity to present the edited taped case during TCT Week to a world-renowned panel of key opinion leaders, and those with accepted submissions will become TCT faculty and have their registration fees waived. Excellent examples include new percutaneous valves, heart failure support devices, novel peripheral atherectomy system, cerebral thrombus extraction device, large hole vascular closure, etc.

Description of an Edited Live Case

An edited live case is a case demonstration that typically consists of capturing the following elements of an interventional procedure performed in a cath lab in real time:

• Narrated patient history slides and an introduction of the case

• A wide camera shot of the primary operator from across the table narrating the demonstration

• A close up camera shot of devices and techniques from the foot of the table

• Live imaging captured from fluoroscopy, echo, IVUS, etc

These sources are then edited together with the operator's audio narration to show a point of interest at each phase of the case. Often picture-in-picture (PIP) technology is used to allow for multiple images to appear on screen concurrently. Periods of inactivity are removed to reduce the overall playtime of the case.

Submission Guidelines

Step 1: Case Summary

• A written summary no more than 500 words describing your case. This is submitted online

• The deadline to submit your summary is July 26, 2013

After receiving notification of your accepted summary, you will be asked to complete step 2 (below).

Step 2: Edited Live Case

• Insert two (2) to three (3) introductory slides describing the technology at the beginning of the edited taped case

• The edited case must be submitted by express mail on a playable DVD, NTSC 4:3 format and can be no longer than 15 minutes

• The case should be edited so there are clear and concise teaching points. There should also be places in the presentation where the case can be paused to allow for panel discussion.

• The presentation is strictly for educational purpose and is not promotional although the company manufacturing the device may be acknowledged once at the beginning of the presentation

• No company logos are allowed

• All patient identifying information must be removed throughout the presentation in accordance with HIPAA guidelines

Final cases will be reviewed for acceptance. Accepted cases will be reviewed and additional edits may be suggested as necessary.

If you have questions about the suitability of a device, please contact Margaret Zetts at mzetts@crf.org.
