2013 CREOG and APGO ANNUAL MEETING

Extending Your Reach in Women’s Health Education: Up, Out, Across, and Around

February 27 - March 2, 2013 Phoenix, Arizona

The Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) invite you to contribute to the 2013 CREOG and APGO Annual Meeting. Medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty are all encouraged to submit abstracts in response to this Call for Abstracts and Posters.

We are excited about the theme of the 2013 Annual Meeting, “Extending Your Reach in Women’s Health Education: Up, Out, Across, and Around” and want you to be a part of the meeting. All submissions of original work related to education in Obstetrics and Gynecology will be considered for inclusion as Oral Abstracts or Posters.

This year, we are especially interested in receiving submissions related to the five broad topics listed below in the context of education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Examples of what might fit into each category are also provided as suggestions.

Reaching Up – Setting and Attaining Stretch Goals for Individuals, Programs and Institutions

Reaching Out – Mentoring, Developing Philanthropy, Promoting Diversity, and Medical Arts and Humanities

Reaching Across – Handling Conflict Resolution, Interdisciplinary Learning, and the Educational Continuum of UME, GME and CME

Reaching Around – Considering Global Health and Medical Education; Working with Underserved Communities

Reaching Your Learners – Utilizing Technology in Education and Meaningful Assessment

All submissions will be blinded and scored by a group of peer judges who are members of CREOG and APGO. You must indicate on the form whether your submission should be considered as an oral presentation, as a poster, or as either. Up to forty abstracts will be accepted for oral presentation based on their educational merit, relevance and general interest. Unless otherwise indicated, the remaining meritorious submissions will be considered for inclusion in the poster sessions.

Every year, a number of awards are given to outstanding posters and abstracts presented at the meeting. The current list of awards appear at the bottom of this letter. Note that CREOG and APGO will be again offering an award for the best abstract submitted by a part-time/ volunteer faculty member. We are also pleased to announce a new award in 2013 sponsored by The Foundation for Exxcellence in Women’s Health Care. This $500 Award for Exxcellence will be presented to a Medical Student, Resident, Fellow or Faculty Member for the best use of the Exxcellence in Life-Long Learning (L3Ob/Gyn) or Pearls of Exxcellence programs directed by the Foundation for Exxcellence in Women’s Health Care. Submissions for the CREOG and APGO Annual Meeting have both written and electronic components. The electronic component must be sent via the CREOG website at http://classic.acog.org/creog-abstract-submission and must be complete by 8:00 a.m. EST on Monday, August 20, 2012. The paper component must be postmarked on or before August 20, 2012.

Call for Abstracts: Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Women in Medicine and Science Council of Deans Poster Session and Reception

The AAMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS) Steering Committee invites the submission of abstracts for consideration for the GWIMS/Council of Deans (COD) Poster Session and Reception at the 2012 AAMC Annual Meeting on Sunday, November 4 (6-8 p.m.) in San Francisco, Calif.

Members of the GWIMS community and members of all other AAMC affinity groups are encouraged to submit abstracts.

The theme of this year’s Annual Meeting is Innovation, and thus, the GWIMS Steering Committee is seeking submissions that describe innovative programs, policies, projects, practices or research that address “Advocating to Improve the Workplace for Everyone”.

Potential topics include but are not limited to:

Family Friendly Work Environments
• Tenure pause policy
• Maternity/paternity policies
• Childcare facilities
• Part-time faculty

Increasing Cultural Competence
• Search committee bias training

Focus on Underrepresented Groups in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
• Training for diversity and inclusion

Deadline
The deadline for submissions: Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 5 p.m. EST.

Submission Process
Abstracts should be a maximum of 500 words and must be submitted online. In order to submit an abstract, you need to have an AAMC account. Download instructions on how to verify or create an AAMC account and how to submit an abstract.

Review and Selection Process
The Committee will review, judge and select abstracts using the following criteria:

Contribution to GWIMS 2012 theme
Clarity of writing and organization of ideas
Ideas have potential to be adapted to other sites or programs
Creativity and originality
Significance for academic medicine

Poster Contest
Accepted authors will be asked to submit a PDF of their poster by Monday, September 24, 2012 so that the poster contest can occur prior to the Annual Meeting. The GWIMS Steering Committee will recognize the best poster at the GWIMS/COD Poster Session and Reception, the GWIMS Business Meeting, and the Women in Medicine and Science Awards Luncheon.

Notifications
Notification of acceptance will occur by mid July 2012.

Conference Fees, Travel, and Lodging
All presenters are responsible for registering in advance for the conference, paying the registration fee, and securing and paying for travel and lodging.

Call for Papers: Society of Teachers of Family Medicine 39th Annual Conference on Medical Student Education

The Call for Papers for STFM's 39th Annual Conference on Medical Student Education is now open. The conference will be held January 24-27, 2013 in San Antonio, Texas. This is the premier conference to share your medical student education strategies and learn new ones.

Submission Deadline: Monday, June 18, 2012

We particularly want to encourage students, new faculty, and those new to medical student education to submit proposals and attend. For program coordinators, we invite you to make this conference your own. Each of you can share best practices. What is new or surprising? What has or has not worked? What are your lessons learned?

This is an exciting time for family medicine. In the 2011 NRMP match, 2,555 individuals chose to become family physicians. According to the AAFP, this is the third time in over a decade (2011, 2010 and 2008) that more US seniors matched into family medicine compared with the preceding year. The quality of our educational programs must help to sustain this momentum!

We recommend proposals that span the full range of issues related to medical student education in family medicine. You are welcome to submit on any topic of interest to you, and feel free to consider these "hot topic" areas:

• Integrating competence and teacher evaluation
• How to use digital tools to teach or assess students
• Fresh ideas and scholarship on new-faculty mentoring
• How to recruit, retain, and reward preceptors
• How students add value to community clinics
• How to sustain interdisciplinary skills

There will be updates to the program this year linked to recent attendees feedback. Sunday travel home is often a challenge, so the Sunday program will wrap up early again to give more flexibility with flights home. That said, we will still offer a vital Sunday morning with networking breakfasts and discussion tables with attendees from the Society of Student Run Free Clinics conference, and an exciting closing session.

In addition to peer review for all proposals, we continue to promote presentation quality. We will offer on-site poster feedback, and top posters will be recognized. There will be many high quality sessions to attend. Submit your proposals and pass the word to your colleagues!

Call for Abstracts for the 2012 Association of American Medical Colleges Annual Meeting GEA/GIR/GIP/GRMC - Virtual Space Tours

Theme: Innovations in new or old spaces – clinical, research, education, multi-purpose

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) invites abstract submissions of virtual tours showcasing innovations implemented in old or new clinical, research, or learning spaces. These innovations should improve or extend use of the space beyond the original methods for which it was designed. Accepted authors will be invited to present a brief virtual tour highlighting their innovation during the AAMC Annual Meeting. In this format, presenters will give a five-minute visual tour of the space or innovation followed by a five-minute question-and-answer period. Accepted tours will be accessible via electronic link on the AAMC Web site. These tours will become part of a collection of innovations in the use of space that will be accessible online. This session will take place during the AAMC Annual Meeting in San Francisco, Calif., November 2–7, 2012. The date and time of the session have yet to be finalized.

Examples:

Education Space: A school has limited space in which to build out a simulation and clinical skills center so they design flexible exam rooms that can convert into task training rooms

Research Space: A clinical and translational research facility was constructed to bring together researchers from different fields into an open space laboratory and office setting

Clinical Space: A school has recently developed a new ambulatory specialty services complex in partnership with a regional health network

Mixed Use: A former shopping mall was transformed into a second campus that incorporated space for multiple missions, extracurricular activities and retail use

The AAMC welcomes Virtual Tour submissions from the wide variety of members involved in academic medicine.

Review and Selection Process

Abstracts will be peer reviewed and selected using the following criteria:

The space is innovative in its design or is used for innovative purposes
Work described shows melding of space resources and the purpose of the space
Ideas presented display potential to be adapted to other sites or programs
Written abstract is clear and organized
Abstract content can be demonstrated using a visual virtual tour format

Final notification of acceptance for presentation at the Virtual Tour will be made by August 1. Authors must prepare a virtual tour that does not require an Internet connection for projection during their presentation. Travel expenses and meeting registration remain the responsibility of the author.
